However, local residents continue to use these devices to view the stars at night and enjoy shooting sports such as deer hunting and shotguns

Suwanee, Georgia is a city located in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 51,717. It is the county seat of Clarke County and has been since 1836. The city was named after General James Suwanee who fought in the Mexican–American War. The first settler in Suwanee was Captain John Smith who built a log cabin on April 17, 1836. The town began to form when a group of men from neighboring counties pooled their money to build a road through Suwanee so they could trade goods with those living near Fort Payne and Savannah. The first post office opened in 1840 and remained open until 1892 when it was moved to Decaturville because that town had outgrown its importance as an agricultural center during this period of American history. During World War II, Suwanee played an important role as one of three major military installations within Clarke County which produced more than half a million munitions for Allied forces effort during World War II alone. Other aspects of local economy during this time included steel production at nearby Cabbageskin Steel Works (now known as Raymond James Stadium), chemical production at local company Dow Chemical Company, retail sales along University Avenue and other shopping areas%, and health care services provided by two hospitals- Methodist Hospital (now Chattahoochee Valley Healthcare) and Grady Memorial Hospital- both located adjacent to each other on Third Street across from City Hall Plaza until their closure in 2001 due to financial problems). In recent years much development has happened around downtownSUWANEE including renovation/updating of City Hall Plaza which now houses several businesses including eateries/retail stores; new public library building completed in 2013; construction beginning on Gwinnett Place hospital project which will replace Methodist Hospital and Grady Memorial Hospitals; development announced for First Baptist Church property located just east of downtownSUWANEE which will include multiple buildings housing offices and apartments; new light rail line called “ Gwinnett Place” connecting downtownSUWANEE with Midtown Atlanta via transit stops located near I-285/I-75 exits 17th Street north and 20th Street south

The Suwanee community was settled in 1822 by Major James Wilkinson and his wife, Deborah. The Wilkinson’s were among the first white families to live in what is now Suwanee County, Georgia. They built a small cabin on the banks of the Chattahoochee River, near present-day Decatur Junction. The Wilkinson’s name stuck with the community and they continued to use it as their primary address until 1888 when they moved to Valdosta. In that year, they also built the first post office in Suwanee County. The town was named after General Nathaniel Banks who had helped lead American forces against Spain during the Mexican-American War. Suwanee grew rapidly due to its location and its access to water resources. By 1860, there were more than 100 people living in the town. Over time, other settlers arrived and Suwanee became an important agricultural center for surrounding counties. In 1912, Suwanee was renamed from Bentonville after Representative John Bentsen (D-Alabama) who represented Georgia in the United States House of Representatives from that state at that time. Today,Suwanee remains a vibrant community with a rich history dating back more than two centuries
On September 3, 1838, the first slave trade from Georgia to the Deep South was conducted. The slaves were taken from the Chattahoochee Valley in northern Georgia and sold at auction in Augusta, Georgia.
