Suwanee, Georgia is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,527 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Fulton County and home to the Suwanee campus of Emory University. The Suwanee area has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two thousand years. The first Europeans to visit the area were Spanish explorers who camped on a bluff overlooking the Suwanee River in 1607. In 1778 Cherokee Chief Muscogee John Ross led a force of twenty-five hundred warriors against Spanish forces under Antonio de San Juan y Costilla at Battle of Horseshoe Bend, routing them and taking three cannons as spoils. In 1801 Spain ceded this sector of Florida to America and named it Santa Fe de Georgia after King Carlos IV of Spain's claim to that territory. By 1821 all Indian land east of Stonington had been sold or leased to white settlers, including James McMurtry who built his plantation there in 1824. A post office called Suwanee was established in 1814, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. A school was founded here in 1837 by Reverend Drayton Witherspoon; it became known as "The School for All Mankind" because it offered education for freed slaves and their children from 1861 until 1865 when they were admitted into Tuskegee Institute (later Tuskegee University). It reopened as an academy with African American students on April 15, 1865 following the Emancipation Proclamation issued by Abraham Lincoln that ended slavery throughout America. In 1840 Captain John Wilkinson erected a log cabin near what is now downtown Suwanee; he named it Wilkinson's Cabin because he donated the land for it and served as its first magistrate (a role which he filled twice). This ferry landing also served as one point where goods could be transferred between Atlanta and Savannah while being transported downriver to Greenville or Travellers' Rest on Lake Superior. In 1850 Colonel Samuel Jourdan built him his own mansion on present day Pryor Street within easy walking distance of Wilkinson's Cabin; this house still stands today and is used as apartments by locals and tourists alike during business hours (see photo below). In 1860 David Denny purchased what are now Pryor Streets from Colonel Jourdan; Denny renamed them Kirkland Avenue after himself since he owned almost all of downtownSuwanee at that time excepting what are now Goodna Road/Civic Center Drive which remained part of Colonel Jourdan's estate until 1893 when he died intestate without issue shareholding rights therein according to law then existing among certain heirs thereof; Kirkland Avenue thenceforth became known officially simply as "Denny Boulevard". At about this time several small businesses located along Pryor Streets began providing services such as grocery delivery/take-out etc., most notably Golden Corral restaurant which opened its doors on December 12, 1959 inside City Hall [now downtownSuwanEE], serving up delicious combinationawed chili dogs & chicken nuggets until recently! There have also been many development projects over time such as Sam Boyd Stadium across Goodna Road from City Hall originally planned but never built due mostlyto lackof funding however recent excavation shows stadium may exist beneath surface] construction began shortly thereafter culminating with game 5 win over Atlantas SSW regional rivals Cobb Braves August 14th 1997 concurrent with establishment of new DowntownSuwanEE Police Department station located just north Airport property adjoining current SUWAANEE BUSINESS CENTER] prior thereto numerous retail establishments existed along main drag including BEST FOODS store) becomingCENTENNIAL COFFEE HOUSEGarden View Shopping Centeropenedlate 1990s adjacent thereto] bringing much needed commercial activity back into center core following economic downturn caused by recession affecting entire Southeast region . However, by World War I multiple wars have resulted in increased competition between different businesses which has led to decline in business activity throughout most of the 20th century During World War II (1939-1945), much of what is now downtown Suwanee was destroyed by bombs dropped from American bombers during World War II. The bombing resulted in many homes being damaged or destroyed but also created new buildings such as Stroud Hall which still stands today as one ofSuwanEEs most notable landmarks. Additionally some important infrastructure such as water systems were also lost including nearly all streetlights within blocks radius of downtownsuwannee during wartime years unfortunately leaving much parts Of DowntownSUWANEE virtually dark at night for many years afterwards Notwithstanding these setbacks however significant progress has been made since 1945 with development taking place on both sidesofthe river where residential areas have grown up close to downtown while commercial districts have emerged along Interstate 285 northward into northern Fulton County . These changes have led to renewed interest in downtownSUWANEE both nationally and locally where it is now considered an attractive destination for tourists seeking unique shopping experiences unavailable elsewhere within Atlanta metropolitan area
