Suwanee, Georgia is a small city located in the U.S. state of Georgia. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Suwanee Micropolitan Statistical Area and is included in the Atlanta-Fulton County, GA Combined Statistical Area. The name "Suwanee" comes from Cherokee word "kunawa," meaning 'sunny place'. In 1802, General Jameson took refuge on Indian Creek near what is now Suwanee after being driven out of his home by an American force under General Andrew Jackson. In 1819, Captain John Capps surveyed a location for a town on Hiwassee River which would become Suwanee. The settlement was named after General Jameson's daughter and wife's sister, Susanna Phillips (1799-1865). The first white person to live in Suwanee was Ebenezer Higgins who came to establish a toll road between Athens and Milledgeville in 1821. In 1830, Colonel Robert Rankin organized a militia company called the Reserve Corps of Georgians to protect frontier settlements against Indian attacks. By 1840, there were 10 stores inSuwanee with 160 residents and one log cabin used as a post office office until 1861 when it moved to Decatur where it continued until 1865 when it became effective as an incorporated town with its own government until 1907 when it merged into Fulton County under then Secretary of State John Crain's administration with all other county seats consolidated into Fulton County proper including SuwanEE although some residents still retain their separate ZIP codes
