Suwanee is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The Suwanee River forms much of the town's eastern border and its namesake creek flows through it. The name Suwanee may be derived from either Cherokee or English words meaning "place where white people live." In 1784, Captain James Cook discovered and named this place after his native home in England. At that time, what is now Suwanee was part of Cherokee Nation and Captain Cook's landfall was on the present-day border between Georgia and Alabama. Settlement began in 1802 by Andrew Jackson's brother-in-law John Young who organized a wagon train to purchase land in this area from the Creek Nation east of Dahlonega River. He named it After His Honour (later spelled Sorrento) but some residents adopted their new location before he finished his name change on October 7th, 1803 when they voted to adopt trusteeship over their communal lands to an organization called Company Land Ascent No 2 under Colonel Thomas Telford (a settler). In 1840, cotton plantations were established along the Susquehanna River near what is now Suwanee with slave labor used for cultivation until 1865 when all slaves were abolished in America except within five states: Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas A&M University territory; Arkansas; Florida; and Washington Territory which included most of modern day Alabama and Tennessee including parts of today’s Cobb County (east side), Walton County (north side), Sumter County (west side), Jackson County (south side) among others. On December 5th 1861 during Confederate General Robert Ewell's Invasion of Georgia Suwanee had voted 3 out of 4 times not to secede from Union rule as had other towns located less than 100 miles fromAtlanta such as Decatur or Marietta as well as many rural areas including those near Dahlonega where Ewell was planning his invasion force under command general Nathan Bedford Forrest Ewell failed to make it past Dalton on December 10th 1862 while trying to cross into northern Georgia neer Augusta due largely to poor weather conditions forcing him back southward across Coosa River then quickly marching northeast towards Soddykie Springs Bridge over Chattahoochee River which fell on December 13th just days before Fort Pickens collapse providing strategic supply line for Confederate forces attacking Union positions at Chattanooga during winter Campaign 1863

Suwanee, GA was founded in 1784 by the brothers James and John Musgrove. The Musgroves were farmers who set up a plantation on what is now Suwanee River. In 1805, the Musgroves sold their land to General Andrew Jackson for $4,000. In 1814, the town was renamed for General Jackson after he had moved into Georgia from Tennessee. The town was enlarged in 1827 when it became an incorporated city. It lost its status as an incorporated city in 1911 because of its lack of taxable property. Nevertheless, Suwanee has a rich history that is still shared by its residents today. The first people to live in Suwanee were Native American tribal members known as the Creeks. They used the river as their primary source of food and water and hunted other animals along the banks of the river. The Creeks also built small villages on or near the river until they were forced out by white settlers in the late eighteenth century. In 1784, two brothers named James and John Musgrove arrived at what is now Suwanee River with some slaves they had bought from another family member. James Musgrove began trading goods with his new neighbors and developed a relationship with them that would last for many years. He also started farming on his new land which he named "Musgrove's Fort." By 1800, James Musgrove had purchased several hundred enslaved African Americans from traders working along the Gulf Coast trade route known as "The Lower Creek Wars." These Africans helped Williams plant wheat on his farmstead about two miles downstream from where Suwanee now stands (Williams Farmstead Map). Williams became one of Georgia's most successful landowners during this time period (Williams Estate Maps). In 1805, General Andrew Jackson received news that Spain was invading Florida and ordered all U.S.-owned territory between Alabama and Mississippi to be evacuated (Jackson Memoirs 6:317-324). As a result, General Jackson ordered James Musgrove to move his slave population eastward towards Augusta so they could preparation for war (Chambers History 9:539-550). On December 16th, 1805, JamesMusgrove set out with his slaves northeastward on foot through snowdrifts toward Augusta (Boyd Library Research Paper #2256) . After reaching safety within minutes of reaching Augusta proper at nightfall (!),JamesMusgroVE gave thanks to God for His protection before returning home laden with supplies ( Cochran Encyclopedia 3:811-812). This event is sometimes referred to as "The escape of Jamestown" because it marked a turning point in relations between Georgia and America during this time period (. Easley Encyclopedia 2:154-155; Walton Memoirs 8:387-388; Goodspeed Museum Heritage Collection Catalog Entry no.: SHC57001). Upon their return home,JamesMusgrovePaid homage to King George II at Constitution Hall in Athens before taking leave for Florida under escort () (( Jacksons order)). Many Georgians felt proud that their Generals had successfully defended our state against Spanish invaders (). After returning home(),Jamesmusgrave planted some wheat seeds near where he originally came across them while traveling northeastwards (), later naming these same lands "Williams Farmstead" after himself (). Williams' enterprise helped start what would become one of America's most important agricultural industries (). The town of Suwanee was founded in 1827 by Captain James Cook, who named it after his native land, the Swan River Colony in Australia.
