It was founded by General John Dunwoody and named after the Suwanee River. The city was established on September 3, 1868, when General John Dunwoody made a landing on the Chattahoochee River to begin construction of his fortifications around what is now Suwanee Lake. On October 12 of that year, he ordered all male citizens of age 10 or older to attend a meeting in order to organize their community into companies for defense purposes. In 1870, local banks refused to loan money for town development because they did not believe in political leverage over businessmen. On November 26 of that year, an act was passed by the Georgia General Assembly authorizing Colonel Nathan Silliman and Captain James Denny to purchase land south of Suwanee Creek from David Cobb for $6 per acre (later raised to $20 per acre). ThisPurchase marked the beginning of growth for Suwanee as a rural village before it became one ofGordonCounty's most important industrial centers during the 19th century. In 1881, following completion of Atlanta-Fulton Railway line through Gordon County and adjacent counties', Suwanee saw its first commercial shipment when goods were delivered by rail from Marietta Junction northeastward through SuwanEEe Creek Valley until reached downtown Atlanta just east of DeKalb Avenue; thence via streetcar (1881–1902) and bus (1902–present) to various urban areas throughout Fulton County. By 1901 there had become an international trade center with offices located in some 20 countries including Japan and Europe thanks in part to dredging methods employed along both banks ofthe Chattahoochee River which had been developed during Reconstruction years following American Civil War I as part as resultof cooperative efforts between railroadroads and state governments aided by private enterprise stimulated by New Deal policies designedto prevent another Southern country from joining Confederate forces at war’s end
