From the 1700s until the Civil War, Suwanee was a small village in northwest Georgia. It was at one time home to a Baptist church, and there is still evidence of that congregation's presence today. The first settler in Suwanee was John Chapman, who came to the area in 1795. In 1814, Augustus Dickey purchased land from Chapman for $10 per acre. By 1830, Suwanee had become a town with a post office and six stores. During the early 1800s, Methodists began coming to Suwanee to preach. One of their leaders, Reverend John Sledgehammer (1792-1878), built a large house here which he called "The Mountain House." Reverend Sledgehammer also started an agricultural school here which educated local kids about farming techniques. After Reverend Sledgehammer died in 1878, his wife continued to run the school until it closed in 1902. In 1870, construction began on what is now theSuwanee County Courthouse. That building served as both the town hall and courthouse until it burned down in 1907. A new courthouse was built soon afterwards and serving as the county seat from 1907-1960 before being moved to Milledgeville (now Atlanta) for that purpose. After World War II ended, most of what remained of Suwanee were destroyed by fire or bombings during the war years – but some structures did survive including The Mountain House and The Courthouse Annex (built 1925). Today much of what is left of SuwanEE remains abandoned although there are plans underway to redevelop some portions into housing units and business districts
