The first sugarcane plantation in Georgia was founded in 1793 by James White and his brother John White in what is now Sugar Hill Township. The plantations were named after sugar prices that had been high at that time; for example, Charles White's Plantation yielded "two hundred thousand pounds sterling" (equivalent to $4 million today) worth of sugar during its heyday in 1810-1815. In 1845, Isaac Newton leased from James Milledge one acre (0.40 hectares) of land along present day OSBIRD Road for five years with an option to renew for an additional five years; this lease became effective on July 1, 1846. Newton later sold this land to George Hines who developed it into what is now known as Sugar Hill Cemetery and Park Preserve. A post office called Sugar Hill was established in 1837, and remained in operation until 1909. In 1840, General Nathan Bedford Forrest purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) adjoining what is now Highland Park from Andrew Jackson for $2 million dollars ($106 million today). This purchase included a large tract of land lying between Roswell Creek on the north and Druid Hills Road on the south which Forrest renamed "Sugar Hill". He began developing it into a large plantations with fields measuring up to 15 miles long by 5 miles wide yielding 100 tons or more of cane per acre yielding about $1 million per year at its peak before he died suddenly near Atlanta in 1895 aged 73 years old; his heirs continued development but production stopped after World War I resulting in a total loss of $8 million (£54 million). Of this amount only around 20% has been restored since then due primarily to financial constraints however much remains still extant including interiors of some older homes which have been repainted using local artisans while others are currently being renovated as single family dwellings with gardens or attached backyards .
