For many years after they left sugar country behind, members of the Burr family continued to use their plantation holdings as a source of income while living separate lives elsewhere on Georgian soil; however, when they passed away without children existing to inherit their estates, they left behind a large number of slaves on their plantations who would continue working until they died or escaped into free labor during Reconstruction–a period which saw significant change occur within southeastern Georgia under Ulysses S. Grant’s administration following the end of slavery there).
