SugarHill is one of the few remaining towns in Clarke County that still retains its historic buildings and residents from the 1800s. The first settlers to move to Sugar Hill were James and Nancy Sweet who arrived in 1792. The Sweet family had two sons-one of whom became a lawyer and judge in nearby Decatur County. In 1818, John Stephens settled on a piece of land near what is now Sugar Hill and began operations as a whaling station. By 1845, sugar had become an important commodity in the area so many other families also moved into the village including David Witherspoon who owned several thousand acres (20 km2) around it. A post office was established at Sugar Hill in 1848; it continued operation until 1907 when it was transferred to Marietta. One of the most significant events at Sugar Hill occurred on July 4, 1851 when thousands of people gathered there to celebrate President Ulysses S. Grant's inauguration as President of the United States over concerns about slavery (the slaves had not been freed). The event was considered one of the largest slave weddings ever convened and resulted in several hundred free black couples being married at what is today known as Crystal Lawn Cemetery east of town on US Highway 611A
