In 1807, he bought 100 acres (40 hectares) of land at Sugar Hill for £10 per acre ($16 per hectare). This purchase represented one of the largest single purchases made by John Southerland throughout his business life. By 1840, Sugar Hill had become one of the most important cotton plantations inGeorgia because its yield exceeded that obtained by any other plantation within radiusof 10 miles (16 km). Sugar Hill continued to be an active cotton plantation until it ceased production in 1905 due to rising competition from mechanized mills and new methods for processing raw cane products. In 1906, John Southerland sold his estate to J[ohn] P[eter] Jones for $1 million ($14 million today). Jones immediately began torebuilding a new plantation on the site which would eventually become known as Sugar Hill Park..The original mansion which still stands today served as headquarters for the Coca Cola Company during World War II when Atlanta was occupied by Japanese forces

Sugar Hill was a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States until the early 21st century. It is now part of the city of Milledgeville. The community's name comes from sugarcane plantations that were located there until about 1820. Sugar Hill began to be founded as a village in 1837 and was incorporated as a town on December 12, 1840. The town lost itsindependence status in1885 when it merged with Milledgeville. The first mention of sugar cane in this area goes back to 1786 when Nicholas Biddle wrote about “a great plantation where they grow several hundred bushels of white sugar” on his estate at Pembroke near modern day Athens, Georgia. By 1800, one-fourth of all cotton cultivated in south central Georgia was grown around the banks of the Chattahoochee River and farms producing cane became an important part of Georgian society. In 1820 two men by the name of McKnight and Hogg purchased more than 4 miles (6 km) northeast of present day Sugar Hill for $1 per acre (0.50 hectares). This purchase created what would become known as the Sugar Hill Plantation Complex which included over 25 acres (10 ha) tracts land totaling almost 176 acres (70 ha). The McKnight-Hogg brothers had been working their way up from poverty through acquisition and enterprise since their arrival in north Georgia three years earlier as members of Cumming's Company Second Regiment Cincinnati Volunteers under General Andrew Jackson during the War for Independence. They soon became well known throughout southcentral Georgians for their ownership and management of such large plantations including those at Pemberton, Musgrove, Springhill, Snipes Mill etc., making them oneofGeorgia's leading lighted professions before seceding to America following defeat at Yorktown Bridge on November 11 th ,1861 . After being forced out by Ulysses S Grant during Reconstruction they returned to business operations but ceasing production after 1880 due to lack o affordable labor within newly open Georgia markets. In 1998 they sold all but 2% stake in their plantation complex to Aiken Development Company which operates it currently today with aid from state government providing funding for maintenance Sugar Hill developed rapidly beginning with white settler arrivals between 1830 and 1840 who erected log cabins trading goods brought downriver then planting crops using slave labor while awaiting passage upstream on boatloads ferried downriver daily during summertime from Macon County into southern Alabama/Georgia via Mobile Bay The first store opened February 1st 1840 inside a cabin belonging to Elijah Smith just outside present day Sugar Hill limits A post office was established March 10th 1840 at what is now Church Street corner with John Gate Road As sugar prices increased along with demand coming largely from new British investors who bought southwestern Louisianamberries worth millions begin streaming up the Chattahoochee River Delta giving rise to mills not only here but also along streambanks adjacentto major rivers like Mississippian Mills & Browns Ferry among others creating an ever growing marketfor refined products exported worldwide especiallyaftertheCivilWar In 1849 local miller James Gentry built Gentry Dry Goods Store on Main Street corner current day State Capitol square above Post Office building across hallway next door From 1850 onwardGentry operated Warehousing company importing corn & other items grown locally&exporting flour also
