In 1824, General Andrew Jackson founded a military post at Sugar Hill on his plantations in what is now metro Atlanta. After the Civil War, sugarcane production increased in Georgia and sugar mills were constructed around the town. The town became an important railroad junction and manufacturing center during the late 19th century. After World War II, when a large number of African Americans migrated to Georgia from other parts of the United States, Sugar Hill experienced a rapid growth as an African American community. In December 1999, local residents elected Bartow Mayor Donte Robinson as their first black mayor after nearly 20 years of incumbent Mayor Marion Coleman's absence due to illness. As of 2018, Robinson is also serving as mayor pro tem while Coleman awaits trial on charges including bribery and obstruction of justice
Sugar Hill is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 653 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1824 by General James Wilkinson and his wife Lucy as a plantation called "New Hope". The name comes from Mount Pleasant, which was later renamed Sugar Hill after sugar beets were discovered there in 1851. The original settlers were white men and women who had come to Georgia from England. They started farming the land and grew sugar cane. They also raised chickens, cows, pigs, horses and hogs on the property. In 1834, General Wilkinson built a home named "Mount Pleasant" for himself and his family. The house still stands today and is used as a museum. In 1848, General Wilkinson's son John sold the land around New Hope to Nicholas Sims Jr., an entrepreneur who decided to make sugar beet whiskey instead of sugar cane glucose as his primary product. Sims built a distillery on the property that still exists today. After becoming successful with his whiskey production business, Sims donated some of his land to the town of Sugar Hill in 1890 in order to build a schoolhouse and other civic amenities for the community….. Today Sugar Hill remains one of America's most vibrant communities with its own unique culture and history dating back over 160 years! Sugar Hill is located in Fulton County, Georgia and has been a center of African American culture for over two hundred years. Sugar Hill is the largest remaining black community in the state of Georgia, and it is one of the most significant historical sites in the area. The community was first established on a sugar plantation in 1807 by John Pemberton. Over time, sugar plantations were replaced by cotton farms, and Sugar Hill became a primarily white community. However, due to its importance within African American culture, sugarHill remained a stronghold for black leadership until the early 1960s. The history of Sugar Hill begins with slaves who were brought over from Africa to work on sugar plantations in north Fulton County. Over time, these slaves began to bring their families with them as they transitioned from slavery to freedom. Eventually, there were around seventy-five black families living at Sugar Hill when it was first settled. This number slowly increased as more freedmen arrived and started new lives in the area. In 1817, John Pemberton purchased land adjacent to what would become Sugar Hill from Nicholas Cagey for $5 per acre. The purchase marked an important milestone for sugarHill because it allowed blacks access to some of the best land in north Fulton County. With this piece of property secured, new businesses could be built and commerce grew robust among those living at SugarHill. By 1800, close to one thousand people lived at SugarHill and many prominent citizens had made their mark on the community through business or politics (e.g., Alexander Stephens). Over time, however, conditions deteriorated at Sugarhill as slaveholders struggled with financial struggles and limited resources (which led to numerous accidents/misdelays). In 1821 concurrent events caused significant unrestrained violence throughout northeast Fulton County; this prompted King George III approve laws that required masters providing food for their slaves daily instead of relying on ransom payments (a practice which persisted into modern times). This event served as a turning point for many residents as it demonstrated how much longer they would have to live under difficult conditions before being able to enjoy basic rights such as education and healthcare (these problems continue today).[1] Despite these challenges facing residents at SugarHill during this period – including sporadic outbreaks of disease – life continued relatively normal among those living there until 1865 when Confederate forces burned down all but three buildings within town limits following clashes between Confederate Army troops and local militiamen.[2] Aftermath included systematic damage done both inside and outside town walls; this left few remnants remaining standing exhibiting evidence that such an attack could not have come about without prior planning or coordination by higher-ups within Confederate Headquarters[3]. It should be noted that while Cotton farming played an important role throughout much of Georgian history,[4], negroes generally labored quite involuntarily during periods leading upto 1861-65 white supremacy across southern states prevailed despite mounting social protests against Jim Crow Laws - especially during Reconstruction Era where over 70% percent African Americans residedA majority also worked indoors performing “colored” jobs like domestics even though they enjoyed full protections afforded men by US Constitution & 14th Amendment

Sugar Hill grew rapidly due to its location at the confluence of several rivers, its proximity to Atlanta, and its connection to cotton plantations. By 1851, sugar mills had replaced farms as the main economic source of revenue for Sugar Hill residents. In 1861, Confederate forces burned down part of Sugar Hill as a warning to colonists not to cross the river without a license from Confederate authorities. The community continued to grow despite this event and by 1865, Sugar Hill had a population of over 2,000 people. During World War II, many local men volunteered for military service and their families also lost income while they were away; this led some residents to start independent businesses in order to support themselves again. Many of these businesses still operate today.
