Sugar Hill is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. It is located on the north side of Atlanta, about 20 miles (30 km) east of the city center. The population was 9,545 at the 2000 census. Sugar Hill was founded in 1837 by planters from southeastern England and Ireland who came to America to find new land and start anew. They called their new community "Sugar Hill" after the sugarcane that grew in what is now Sugar Hill Cemetery. The first black settler in Sugar Hill was James Chilton, who arrived in 1838. The town's growth followed a common pattern among early American towns: settlement by planters led to its rapid expansion and growth during the 1840s and 1850s as more people moved into SugarHill from all over Georgia and South Carolina. During this time period, sugar plantations were becoming increasingly automated; workers were no longer needed on these large plantations anymore because they could be replaced by steamboats or railroad locomotives. This change had a significant impact on Sugar Hill's economy; many of the plant's employees left for greener pastures when transportation became available outside of plantation-based industries such as shipping and agriculture. However, while some residents may have left for greener pastures, most of those living in SugarHill continued to rely on their local plantation economy for their livelihoods until after World War II when it began to decline significantly due to mechanization and other factors outside of sugar production

It is part of theAtlanta-Fulton County-Roswell metropolitan area. The first settlers in what would become Sugar Hill were slaves who worked on a plantation by their owner's father. By 1829, most of the original black families had left for freedom and started new lives in other parts of Georgia and Florida. A group of white men from Athens, Georgia met a group of black men from Mobile Bayou along the Chattahoochee River and decided to make sugar cane their main crop. They named their settlement after a hill that they saw rising near Athens in that year. The first store opened in 1830 and soon began to grow into an important commercial center for eastern Fulton County. The business grew so much that it moved to its present location on Commerce Street in 1836. In 1840, sugar planters built more than 60 homes around what became known as "The Grove". This large estate still stands today as one of Sugar Hill's most valuable assets - hosting events such as Jazz Festivals and Botanical Gardens shows each year since 2003! In 1862, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces burned down many businesses including this one in order to hide supplies from Union troops encampments nearby. The loss not only destroyed Sugar Hill's economy but also damaged some property which continues to be valued today by taxpayers partially due to insurance proceeds paid out years later following another fire at the same site! After Reconstruction ended in 1865, many freedmen returned home and set up stores orchards throughout central Fulton County including Sugar Hill where fruit trees now stand (theoriginal Orchard Stands Today On Constitution Avenue). Over time small farmers gradually replaced larger plantations with smaller acreage for growing crops until there are now just a few scattered farms left scattered throughout central Fulton County providing subsistence agriculture for about 350 people – all descendants of those original slave owners/workers who founded this community over 300 years ago!

Sugar Hill is a small town in Lumpkin County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,458 at the 2010 census. Sugar Hill is part of the Athens-Clarke County Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sugar Hill was founded by slaves in 1814 as "New Hope". The name derived from the fact that sugar beets were being grown on land that had been leased from the Cherokee Nation. The first post office in Sugar Hill was established in 1819 and served until 1865. In 1823, a school was built for white children and opened in 1824. In 1830, cotton plantations were founded in Lumpkin County and early residents of SugarHill became slaveowners and cultivated cotton. By 1840, most of the citizens of SugarHill were black African American slaves who worked on white cotton plantations or rice fields outside of town. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered an attack against Union forces at Gainesborough Dam which resulted in three hundred casualties including seventy-six killed and eighty-four wounded men from the 7th Georgia Infantry Regiment commanded by Colonel William Jarratt Jr.. One hundred fifty men from Company D (4th Alabama) under Captain James Kenedy fought bravely but lost nineteen killed and thirty-five wounded; all nine officers accompanying them were also killed or mortally wounded during this engagement; this event has come to be known as "the bloodiest battle ever fought on American soil".[1] Afterward many blacks fled to Liberia where they would become free after the war while whites continued to live in poverty within what is now Lumpkin County.[2] As a result of this battle many people left their homesickness behind when they migrated to Liberia so they could begin anew among their new kinfolk[3]. During Reconstruction following the Civil War most black Americans were reintegrated into society with few challenges faced until Reconstruction ended in 1877 when Jim Crow laws began limiting opportunities for African Americans living within South Carolina's boundaries because it violated federal law mandating racial equality.[4] This led to mass migration across state lines seeking opportunity which contributed significantly to economic inequality between races throughout much of America following Reconstruction.[5][6] Many residents of Lumpkin County took up farming due to lack of other options although some individuals did manage successful businesses such as Samford Coffee Company & Bakery located downtown today which continues operation today thanks largely to support from local elected officials including Mayor Casey Cagle who purchased property adjacent thereto back when it still operated as a coffee shop/bakery complex called Gateway Days ago before moving it into its current location next door almost two centuries ago! By 1870, sugar had become an important export commodity in Georgia and by 1892 it had become a national trade mark for Coca-Cola. In 1927, J.P Morgan bought land in downtown SugarHill with plans to create an artificial lake that would serve as a commercial center for the surrounding community of about 20 homes and businesses around it. However, when construction started on Morgan's "Lake Ivanhoe" (later renamed Disneyworld) much of townspeople resist relocation because they expected it to impact their daily lives negatively; some still live there today despite objections from developers who believe that Ivanhoe would have been an ideal location for shopping malls and office buildings instead of residences or schools. Finally, in 1990 after more than two decades of planning by developer Harry Connick Jr., SugarHill was designated as a National Heritage Site by the US Department of Interior following years of advocacy by various groups including Preservation Atlanta Incorporated (PAI), which spearheaded efforts to save remnant architecture and culture within the city limits dating back to before American independence from Great Britain
