The courthouse is one of several nineteenth century structures that have been preserved in Fulton County since it was established as a county seat in 1837. The jail also functions as a museum today. Additionally, two churches – Mount Zion Baptist Church and First Baptist Church – are located within the town boundaries. These churches were both built between 1915 and 1917 and are among the earliest examples of black Protestant worshiping in southern Georgia. The history of Sugar Hill can be traced back to 1795, when Isaiah Thomas erected his first sugar cane plantation thereabouts (now part of Jacksonville). Sugar Hill is a small city in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 7,645 at the 2010 census. Sugar Hill is located on the north side of Cobb County and east of Atlanta. It is bordered by Clayton to the south and east, Sandy Springs to the northwest, Stone Mountain to the north and west, and Alpharetta to the south. The name "SugarHill" was given to the community because of its high concentration of sugar cane farms that were used for producing molasses for manufacturing purposes. In 1887, one of the first businesses in Sugar Hill was a grocery store owned by J.D. Smith which became known as "The General Store". In 1892, John Boice built a cotton gin on South Main Street which he named after his father-in-law General James Gage who had helped buildAtlanta's first courthouse in 1837. By 1916 there were ten stores in Sugar Hill with an average size of $2 per inhabitant; however by 1940 only four stores remained with an average size of $1 per inhabitant In 1927 when Atlanta began construction on its public works project called Peachtree Road System it became necessary for workers across metropolitan Atlanta to use local transportation including streetcar lines within neighborhoods such as Sugar Hill so that people would not have their homes bombed during World War II . On December 14th 1927 Fulton County Judge Harry Payne ordered all streetcars operating throughout Fulton County be stopped at 6 p.m., effective immediately while work continued aboveground on Peachtree Road system (then called “Pine Street”).
