Sugar Hill is an unincorporated community in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. It was established in 1878 by a group of settlers who abandoned the town of Decatur on the Chattahoochee River. The community was named for John Suggs, a local banker. Sugar Hill developed as a small farming village before becoming a rural center catering to farmers and ranchers in the early 20th century. In 1922, sugar refineries began production at nearby Decatur and increased demand for ammunition led to the development of sugar-based munitions manufacturing in Sugar Hill beginning in 1923. The industry continued until 1996 when it was closed due to competition from Asia. After closure, many of the buildings were destroyed by fire over the years; however, one structure still stands today: the old sugar refinery building which served as the town's first post office. The history of ammunition begins with ballistics demonstrations held at Fort McAllister during World War I to test new artillery ammunition beingdeveloped in Georgia and elsewhere. By 1920 there were two plants producing munitions here - one for rifles and shotguns and another for machine guns and cannons. Ammunition production continued until 1996 when it was closed due to competition from Asia

SugarHill is located on a ridgeline overlooking Cobb County to the south-southwest and Toombs County to the east-northeast. The town's boundaries are roughly paralleled by State Route 316 (the old Hwy 27), which forms its eastern border; State Route 315 (SR 316) forms its southern border; SR 522 lies just west of SR 316/SR 522's intersection with SR 315/SR 522's intersection with US Highway 401 provides most of its western boundary; and Park Avenue runs north-south through much of Sugar Hill before ending at Power Road near HWY 290E."

They found that charcoal could be used to create a “charcoal black powder” which worked well for cannonballs but was not as effective for other munitions. In 1819, Nicholas-Jacques Conte patented an improved version of this charcoal black powder which he called “Nickel Black Powder.” This new formulation allowed artillerymen to use smaller charges more effectively with less waste. By 1830, nickel black powder had become widely available and was being used in artillery across Europe.
