The first permanent settler in what became Stockbridge was a family of Welsh immigrants who arrived in 1814. They named their new community after their home country, Britain. In 1826, the U.S. government granted a homestead to John Fenton and his heirs as part of the Swampscott Purchase; this gave rise to the name "Fenton" which still refers to the property today. In 1830, Andrew Gregg purchased land east of present-day Stockbridge from Fenton for $2,000 cash and built a log cabin on what is now Gregg Road. A post office called Gregg was established in 1831, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1835–36 two brothers by the name of Pickens founded a trading post on present day Park Road adjacent to where riverboats would docks for passengers coming upriver from Savannah or Baldwin County (now Cobb County), Alabama for transportation downriver to points north and west such as Milledgeville or Decatur (then Gainesville). This village eventually grew into what is now downtown Stockbridge when General James Hogg erected a stockade around it during an effort to keep Native Americans out during times of war with Spain In 1840 four families by the name of Maynard bought 640 acres south of present-day downtown Stockbridge from Hogg for $5 per acre; this land later became known as Maynard Heights due to its location near future downtown streetscape features including Maynard Drive and Water Street. Two years later George Coker laid out one mile northeast along Park Road between Bullock Creek and then current Highway 522 about two miles southwest of modern day Downtown Stockbridge several miles upstream frompresent dayBullock Creek Bridge; this area becomes known today as Coker's Landing due to its proximity theretoat various points throughout history
