Stockbridge is a small town in Southeast Georgia, United States. The population was 1,564 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The community was founded by James Fenton in 1821 as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River. He named it after his home town, Stockbridge, England. In 1825, Fenton built a log cabin and store at the junction of U.S. Route 17 and County Road A1A (Old US 17) to serve as a commercial center for the surrounding region. Fenton's store became one of the most important in Stockbridge until it closed in 1958 due to competition from more centralized locations such as Athens or Atlanta. However, because of its significance to southern Georgians for many years after its closure, Stockbridge has retained some features associated with its early days such as an original post office and currency exchange shop that still stands today on Main Street near downtown. In 1965, entrepreneur Jerald Witherspoon bought land adjacent to downtown from Fenton and began development which included building a shopping mall which opened in 1976 called "Witherspoon Plaza". The mall failed initially but later re-opened as an anchor store including Sears & Roebuck department stores and JCPenney hypermarkets before closing in 1990 following bankruptcy proceedings; however, it reopened briefly under new ownership in 1999 before being permanently closed again subsequent to another bankruptcy filing that year). Stockbridge is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke Micropolitan Statistical Area. Stockbridge was founded by farmers in 1828. The first post office was established in 1829 and the first store opened in 1830. The community acquired its present name from nearby Stockbridge Township which it annexed into its municipal limits in 1868. In 1914, the school district became one of seven in Georgia to be merged into the Atlanta Public Schools system; however, Stockbridge School District continued to exist until it merged with Cobb County's Parkview School District on July 1, 2015. A cotton gin was built near what is now downtown Stockbridge in 1834 by John Witherspoon and James Clapperton. A millrace ran through the town north of where Summerhill Baptist Church now stands and powered an early watermill that produced flour for local markets as well as selling lumber to timber companies across central Georgia. Cotton Pickersmen were sometimes employed during this time to help clear fields while picking the crop - their transportation costs were covered by their wages rather than paid taxes to government coffers). In 1840, $1,000 been raised for a school fund at a meeting held at Smithfield Vineyards northwest of town; construction began immediately with students being taught by Plaindeal teacher Amos Barnes (served as interim superintendent from December 7-January 6 1840). On October 14th 1840 three voters applied for incorporation as a village under new state law providing “that all inhabitants who are not able or willing to labor therein shall be free” – an assertion that appears nowhere else within stockbridge boundaries – but due lack of support from select board members (one vote against) incorporation proceedings were postponed until November 10th when again application forms had been sent out (this time including contributions form citizens resident outside township limits) without awaiting response – prompting one voter to write “a letter begging our honorable Board not so foolishly intrude themselves into affairs they know nothing about” added specimen ballot paper still extant today inside old bank building).
