The town was founded in 1820 and located on a meadow near the present-day capital of Atlanta. The first settler in Stockbridge was James McKnight. He built a log cabin on his farmstead in 1820. Stockbridge was named for George Stockbridge, an early settler who had come from England with his family in 1796. In 1821, James McKnight's brother-in-law Elijah Dyer donated land to build a courthouse and jail in what is now downtown Stockbridge. The first school in Stockbridge was established by Mrs. Anna Putnam on November 10, 1822. A schoolhouse and teacher's cottage were erected soon after on land donated by Mrs putnam's husband Daniel Putnam Sr.. The first student to attend School No 1 were two girls from Chattahoochee Parish: Nannie Hawkins and Rhoda Witherspoon). In 1824, the county seat of Fulton County (then known as DeKalb County) was moved from Athens to stockbridge because of disagreements over boundaries between DeKalb and Gwinnett Counties; however, no permanent settlement could be formed until after the War Between the States when many refugees arrived seeking asylum in north Georgia In 1830, John Boddy platted what is now downtown Stockbridge on land that he had purchased from Ezekiel Hicks for $2 per acre In 1834 GEO Geo Simms opened up a grocery store which became one of the most popular businesses around town In 1840 Elisha Dyer organized a Methodist church here followed by another church established here about 1850 called First Baptist Church also served by Methodists until this building burned down circa 1865 . On January 15th 1861 Union General Braxton Bragg destroyed part of downtown stockbridge during an attack against Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell while they were resting at home before moving on to nearby Decaturville where they planned their next offensive
