The first settlement at what is now Stockbridge dates back to 1802 when Major James Wilkinson and his wife Sarah Keyes Wilkinson built a trading post on the Chattahoochee River after moving from their plantation near Dahlonega, Georgia. At that time, there were only about seventy people living in what is now Fulton County and only two houses had been erected since 1800- which were both destroyed by fire within months of each other). For several years following this initial establishment, traders traveled upriver to trade goods with Native American nations such as the Cherokees who lived along the riverbanks south of Athens (the land where present day Stockbridge sits was then owned by these Cherokee nation). In 1805, while stationed at Fort Moultrie on Lake Cumberland outside of Savannah, Captain James Aiken met Major Wilkinson who introduced him to local farmer John Hillyer who offered to sell him 5 acres (2 hectares) of land next to his farmstead for $100 per year plus expenses - this offer made Aiken one of the earliest settlers in what would become known as Stockbridg
