Stockbridge is a town in Clarke County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Athens–Clarke Metropolitan Statistical Area. Stockbridge is located on the Ocmulgee River and features a Main Street named for General James H. Wilson. The first Europeans to visit Stockbridge were French in 1764 and Spanish in 1765 when they explored the area as part of their exploration of northern Georgia. In 1802, George Washington's forces landed at what is now known as "Camp Powell" on the Chattahoochee River near present-day Stockbridge, while looking for a crossing over to Fort Pickens on Mobile Bay. In 1819, surveyor Amos Kendall surveyed land north of present-day Stockbridge on the east side of the Ocmulgee River; he called his land "Milton". Milton was later renamed "Stockbridge", after Nathaniel Putnam trustee and stock commissioner of Georgia John Fenton bought some of Kendall's land in 1824. When Atlanta became an city in 1847, businessmen from Fulton County decided to move their businesses to new downtown areas such as Marietta and Temple City because those areas had more business enterprise than did rural Clarke County. So many people moved into downtown Atlanta that by 1850 only about one-tenth of the population lived within 1 mile (1 km) of any commercial or industrial district; this distance increased to one-seventh by 1900.stockbridge Landing opened up along Creek Avenue in 1899 and soon became home to several general stores, three churches (one Methodist), two post offices (the first being built 1895), four schools (grades K–8), two hotels/motels—the White House Inn and Idlewild Lodge—and several farmsteads including Millbrook Farmstead No 2 which still remains standing today and offers views across creek Oaks Drive towards downtown Atlanta proper from its front porch . The community was named after stockbridge creek, which ran through it. In 1868 the name changed to Stonecreek because of the abundance of stones found there. The community became an incorporated municipality in 1907 and a city on February 14, 1913. On January 1, 1977 it merged with neighboring Dunwoody to form Stockbridge-Dunwoody City Park District. Stockbridge is located at (34.560927,-81.029953). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land.[1] As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 2,721 people residing in the town: 1,859 (of whom 79% were male) and 714 (of whom 21% were female). The racial makeup of the town was 98% white; 1% black or African American; 0% Native American; and 0% Asian or Pacific Islander
