Stockbridge is a small town located in south Georgia. The population was 4,722 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cobb County,Georgia metropolitan area. The community is named after Stockbridge, Massachusetts, which was once a center of trade and commerce. At one time it was home to over 100 families and now has a population of only around seventy-five people. The history of Stockbridge goes back to 1811 when James Robertson founded the town on land that he had purchased from the Cherokee Indians. Robertson's family operated a ferry service between Stockbridge and Valdosta for many years until they were forced to sell their business in 1873 due to financial difficulties. In 1886, John Waddell bought the business from Waddell's brother-in-law and continued operations until his death in 1922. During Waddell's ownership, the town got its name from nearby Stockbridge Heights which served as an important site for military training during World War I because it had several artillery pieces parked there. In 1956, work began on developing what would become known as The Mall which would house a variety of businesses including four supermarkets, two banks, two health clinics and two movie theaters as well as residences for up to ninety people. The mall opened in 1959 and soon became an important shopping center for southern Georgia residents. After several expansions over the years, The Mall closed down in 1997 following bankruptcy proceedings by its owners. Since then, Stockbridge has seen some growth but remains quite small compared to other communities in Cobb County such as Decatur or Marietta . Although there are no plans currently underway to reopen The Mall - which likely means that it will not be operational again soon - recent development within the community has led to increased activity including new restaurants and stores as well as more homes being built since 2007 when construction began on stockbridge Village which includes an academy with full-time classrooms/programs for students from pre-kindergarten through college degrees; an arena with full-time football/basketball games; three blocks of housing developments called "Homes near Water" that include apartments/condos/townhouses; a daycare; cardiovascular care clinic;aserapy clinic;and more! Stockbridge, Georgia is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Stockbridge's namesake is Samuel French Stockbridge (1802-1875), an early settler and legislator. The town site was first inhabited by the Creek people who built their homes on high ground overlooking the Chattahoochee River. In 1814, Englishman George Jones purchased 3 square miles of land north of present-day Stockbridge from the Creek people for $1,000. The town was formally established on November 1, 1828 when a group of men led by Methodist missionary James Caldwell laid out a plat for what would become Stockbridge Township and named it in honor of Samuel French Stockbridge. At that time there were only six houses in the township and its population consisted mostly of farmers and their families living near downtown or along the riverbank. In 1840, when Union troops burned Athens during the American Civil War, General Nathan Bedford Forrest ordered his cavalry to ride throughStockbridge to devastate any Confederate sympathizers within sight or hearing. As a result of this raid many citizens left for good as Forrest looted and destroyed much property before retreating back into Tennessee without causing any injury to anyone else. After Reconstruction ended in 1865 followingthe end of slavery in America, Stocksbridge became one of several towns located within newly formed Fulton County based on racial considerations rather than political affiliation or economic necessity - thus preventing African Americans from becoming integrated into white society as they had done elsewhere in America since Reconstruction began%. Census data from 1920 reveals that blacks made up just 2%of all residents but they accounted for almost 30%of all workers employed in manufacturing businesses throughout Fulton County; this situation changed dramatically after World War II when black employment soared due to new opportunities available thanks to increasing industrialization which created many jobs both inside and outside Fulton County specifically within suburban housing developments such as Millbrae/Belleair/Dormant Air Force Base and other military installations around Atlanta . Consequently by 1970 black residents constituted almost 60%of all residents living in Fulton County while whites remained close to 60%. This trend accelerated following integration into mainstream American society with African Americans now making up nearly 40%of all employees working full-time outside their homes including those working at publically funded institutions such as schools and hospitals like Emory University where they constitute more than halfthe workforce even though these institutions have been open primarilyto white students since 1950 . Today approximately 90%of all adults residing in Stockbridge are either black or Hispanic while 10-15%are white
