Stockbridge is a small town in Union County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Augusta-Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area. Stockbridge is known for its farmers market and its annual Pumpkin Festival.
The first documented settlement in what would become Stockbridge was made by James Wills in 1786. The early settlers were primarily French Canadian and Native American descent, but some English settlers also arrived during the early 1800s.
In 1825, George Washington Drayton established a gristmill which became one of the largest mills in southern Georgia. The mill produced flour for local markets and exported to other countries. In 1839, Andrew Jackson purchased the mill from Drayton and it continued to be run by his family until it was sold to John Ladd in 1917.
When World War II began, many of Georgia's small towns went into production for munitions manufacturing because there was little domestic production available to meet military needs. Stockbridge residents helped produce over two million rounds of ammunition alone. After the war ended, many of these factories closed down and many jobs left town.
However, there are still a few businesses that remain based in town today including JB Hi-Fi & Electronics (which moved from its original location on Memorial Drive after being displaced by Walmart),Old Mill Toys and Bluegrass Music Hall which has been operating since 1987.

Stockbridge is a city in Forsyth County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,793 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what became Stockbridge was James Sprague in 1793. Sprague's land lay within present-day Forsyth and Gwinnett counties and he named his place "Sprague's Valley". He died young in 1802 and no one knows for sure why he named it that - but it is widely assumed that he saw the valley as a fertile spot for farming or wanted to name a place after himself (James Sprague). In 1821, John Covington moved from Mobile Bay to what is now Forsyth County and set up shop on property that later became known as "Covingtons' Corner". By 1825, Carruth had arrived in Forsyth County also and began building homes around what is now stockbridge. By 1830, both men were living near what would become stockbridge proper; Carruth on High Street and Covington on Old Mill Road (now Goodall Boulevard). That year, General Nathan Bedford Forrest made an attempt to move southward through Chattahoochee National Forest into Gwinnett County but was stopped by Ulysses S. Grant at Muscle Shoals Lake. For many years after this event, Forrest was considered responsible for the failure of his effort to cross Chattahoochee River into Gwinnett County - partly because so many local residents refused to give up their land without a fight. However, historians now believe that Forrest may have been successful if only he'd attacked more heavily than he did instead of withdrawing slowly. A site about two miles northeast of today's stockbridge on Old Mill Road served as an early storehouse for the town during its early years; it burned down circa 1800 but was rebuilt soon afterwards with some alterations by George Washington Carver (1809-1872), one of the founders of Atlanta. In 1835-36 major improvements were made to millinery manufacturing operations conducted by Mrs. Anna Pemberton (née Cobb) at her home on Cemetery Hill northwest of town center; these included new buildings including a large butter churn which still stands today although not used any longer due to vandalism concerns; she also established mills capable of producing flaxseed oil whichacted as an important factor in early settlement growth throughout central Georgia The first school in town probably opened in October 1837 when three girls from northern Alabama came overland via wagontrain and founded Whatley Female Academy just east of town limits; they taught arithmetic, reading aloud from books provided them by Mrs Henshaw & Co., merchants who operated out of Decatur Junction northwest of town limits then extended their trade into neighboring towns includingstockbridge until around 1865 when they closed their business operations due to competition from railroads The school continued operation until February 1862 when all female students were sent away because Confederate military forces occupied Gainesville along with all male students except 1 or2 boys who took refuge among womenfolk Thereafter no primary schools again open till about 1870 when Mr Harlan Weaver started teaching 8th grade history at Uniontown School northeast corneroftown Limits before moving permanently upto present day In high school days we had 3 classes per week plus common room where all grades combined played games together using old desks etc
