The community started as a simple farming village in 1871 and quickly became an important center for rifle and shotgun shooting in the region. In 1886, Stockbridge was renamed after George Washington Stockbridge, an early settler and one of the first people to purchase land in what is now Muscatine County. The town continued to grow over time and by 1912 had reached its current size. Stockbridge is an incorporated city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 26,752 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Fulton County after Atlanta. The area that would become Stockbridge was first settled by Cherokee and Creek Indians in the early 1800s. The town of Stockbridge was founded on a small stream called Millstream by Colonel John Cushing in 1821. He named it for his home town of Stratford, Connecticut. In 1832, James Neely bought 5 lots adjoining those of Colonel Cushing for $550 cash. He built a log cabin and named it Neely's Cabin after himself and his wife Julia (Neely) Barnhill Cushing. In 1835, he married Miss Sally Powers of Decatur, Alabama and began trading as Neely & Powers store. Neely & Powers became one of the largest grocery stores in northeast Georgia before merging with another grocery store chain in 1955 to form JCPenney Corporation. In 1962, JCPenney merged with Kmart Corporation to become Walmart (). At its height, Walmart employed over 50% of all hourly workers statewide (). After years of decline due to factors such as competition from online retailers and a slowdown in economic growth throughout much of the 1990s and 2000s, Walmart announced plans to open 25 million new American jobs between 2009 and 2020 - more than any other company () - which helped spur job growth at nearby Peachtree Mills Mall (). After several months' worth of construction delays – caused by Hurricane Katrina – Walton's initial store opening occurred on September 24th 2008 amidst cheers from shoppers inside the mall ().
