The town's name is derived from its location on the Stockbridge River, which flows through it. The river was named for Sir George Washington, who led a military expedition up the river in 1775. During the Civil War, Stockbridge was one of several towns in Cobb County that sided with Confederate General Robert Ewell. In 1865, Union General Nathan Bedford Forrest forced most of Cobb County to join his march on Atlanta after capturing it from Confederate forces under Jubal Early. After the war ended, many Atlantans moved to Stockbridge and its surrounding rural areas for agricultural purposes including cotton farming and livestock breeding (the apple orchards are still some of the largest in Georgia). Today, many businesses continue to be established here such as Banksy’s One Fifth Street Gallery which opened in 2016- an art gallery/performance space located inside an old engineering mill building on 5th Street NW near Constitution Avenue NW., home office of Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed’s mayoral transition team; Fulton Bank which has been open since 1907; Coca Cola Bottling Company which built their first bottling plant here in 1912; United States Air Force Base Dalton where local firefighters trained during World War II; among others

Stockbridge is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 8,421 at the 2010 census. The name "Stockbridge" is derived from the nearby settlement of Stone Bridge, which was named for John Stricker, a white settler who purchased land there in 1815. The town was founded in 1829 by James Mapes and others as a result of the Panic of 1837. It became an incorporated village in 1851. In 1907 it merged with other villages in the area to form Stockbridge-on-the-Hudson Township. The community began as a small farming hamlet on the east bank of the Chattahoochee River within present-day Stone Bridge Parish. A sawmill and gristmill were built there about 1840 by James Mapes and his family; they operated until around 1870 when local mills went out of business due to competition from more efficient machines imported from Europe. At that time, most people lived near riverbanks or along waterways because transportation was inadequate for goods long distance. A Methodist church was built in 1840 on what is now Grady Street; it burned down in 1845 but was rebuilt under new ownership and renamed First Methodist Church before being destroyed again by fire in 1865. A post office called Stockbridge existed from 1800 to 1830; it changed hands several times before its closing on December 31, 1830. A store opened at this location in 1829 by James Mapes and continued operations until January 1, 1830; it closed because books could not be sold online then (as they are today). In1851, when Stockbridge merged with other villages within stockbridge-on-the-hudson township to form Stockbridge-on-the-Hudson Township, part of the initial boundary included land extending into present day Roswell Borough boundaries northward to I–III Parkway Road/US Route 470 although Roswell Borough limits would extend much further southwesterly into what is now Fulton County Line beyondpresent day Grady Street boundary line once again including all or parts of both StoneBridge parishes - thisdespite previously existing public records showing that only Stricker's Bridge remained within present day stone bridge parish boundaries subsequent to merger while all prior mentioned bridges within present day stockbridge parish had been abandoned/oved away during previous border changes between stone bridge parish & ricardo parish over time
