Stockbridge is a small town in Clarke County, Georgia. It was founded in 1795 by farmers who came from the upper east side of Manhattan. The town grew rapidly after the discovery of oil and gas in nearby Marietta, and became an important transportation hub for eastern Georgia. Stockbridge was named after its original founder, James Stockbridge. Today, the town consists of just over 1,000 residents and has few remaining businesses. It is also home to the only high school in Clarke County. The history of Stockbridge began with farming families who settled in what is now Clarke County in 1795. By 1812, some 60 people lived in the village that would later be called Stockbridge. In 1814, a farmstead called "Bellevue" was established near where modern-day Clearwater Creek flows into the Chattahoochee River. This farmstead served as the nucleus around which development occurred at Stockbridge . During Reconstruction Period (1865-1913), many jobs were available for men who returned from soldiering during the American Civil War. Many farms were abandoned due to lack of laborers and investment by new owners; however, several businesses did manage to survive including a general store owned by John Pemberton , post office operated by Elijah Bunn (a white man), blacksmith shop run by Wm Hinson and Jno Fenton , bakery operated by Mrs . Sayers (a white woman), two stores - one on High Street and one on Railroad Avenue - three cottages - all occupied before 1915 - four schools - Academy School (founded 1865) serving grades 1-6; First Baptist Church which opened as usual September 8th 1865; Gadsden Methodist Episcopal Church first organized 1889 also serving grades 1-6; both churches remain active today; five wells were drilled under Main Street between 1893 and 1895 with each well producing 15 barrels per day starting at $2 per barrel

Stockbridge is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,987 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. The first permanent settler in what is now Stockbridge was John Cate who arrived on May 12, 1802. He named his land "Canton." When the railroad came through town in 1866 it changed the name to "Stockbridge." The community became a stop on the Atlanta and Chattanooga Railroad. In 1898, stockyards were built west of town and soon there were many businesses in town including a grocery store, post office, hotel, millinery shop and several dozen homes. In 1914-15 the School Board decided to build a new school for students in town which would be called James Hogg High School after one of its founders had died. At that time there were only two schools in Fulton County - Stockbridge High School and Parkview Middle School - so this new school was very much needed and quickly became successful with over 1,000 students graduating from it during its first decade of operation! In 1962-63 an addition was made to the high school which increased enrollment to 441 students! The following year (1963) also saw the opening of a multipurpose gymnasium/auditorium which served as both school and civic center until it burned down in 1984! It wasn't until 2001 when another addition was made to the school which doubled enrollment to 711 students! Today Stockbridge continues to grow with initiatives such as becoming an all-girls high school (2009), being made home rule by voters (2013), annexing part of neighboring Morrow County (2015) making it even more diversely populated with residents from 11 different counties within Georgia; having multiple sports complexes; establishing itself as a leading digital academy; and hosting numerous cultural events throughout each year including FolkFestivals., Peach Festivals., Christmas Festivals., ArtFairs., etc..
Stockbridge was founded in 1820 by John Stockbridge, a white man and his African slaves. The town became an important center for cotton production during the late 19th century. It also became a popular location forthaiproduction during the early 20th century. In 1940, Stockbridge was designated as a city by the Georgia General Assembly.
