Stockbridge is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Stockbridge was founded in 1814 by James Webb and his family as a station on the route from Decatur to Athens. A post office called Stockbridge was established in 1827, and remained in operation until 1959. The community began as a small farming community with only a few homes and businesses. By 1860, it had grown to include more than 100 homes and businesses. The main economic activity of the early years was agriculture, but by 1870 there were also several shops and restaurants operating in the community. In 1902, an electric power company became operational in Stockbridge and soon began developing new industries including paper manufacturing, meatpacking, cement manufacturing, oil production (from shale deposits), textiles (including cotton spinning), shoe manufacture (laterATSCO Corporation) and others. By 1960, when it merged with neighboring Dunwoody into one municipality known as Dunwoody-Stockbridge-Dunwoody (DSD), most of the original industry had either disappeared or been replaced by newer plants or technologies. Stockbridge is a town located in Liberty County, Georgia, United States. The population was 3,693 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1823 by John and Elizabeth Stockbridge. It is named after the nearby stream that once flowed through it. The first settler in Stockbridge was John Sprague, who arrived in 1823. He built a cabin on the south side of the creek. A year later, he marriedElizabeth White and they moved to the present location of the town. In 1830, they had another child and renamed their daughter Stockbridge after their home village in England where they were born. The community began to grow rapidly from its original population of just 12 people in 1823 to over 100 by 1830. By 1850, it had reached 250 people and had an arsenal, schoolhouse, store-house and two churches—one Protestant and one Methodist—all within walking distance of each other. By 1870, it had reached 300 people and boasted three businesses: a millinery shop run by Mrs. Clementson; a sawmill run by Mr. Sprague; and a gristmill run by Mr. Herringtonstaller (). As stockyards became more common during the 19th century as farming transitioned into heavy industry, many farmers started using them for storage as well as slaughtering animals for sale or consumption purposes (eager consumers could buy these products directly from local merchants). In 1886–87 when new railroads were being planned through Liberty County,[4] some landowners decided that if their land would be served better by rail transportation than by cowboys riding horseback across country on bumpy trails then surely there must be money to be made somewhere! They quickly realized that building tracks would create jobs for locals while also providing easier access to goods necessary for industrialization such as flour, oilseed Meal (a precursor to soybeans), cottonseed oil etc., which would provide goods not only for individual farmers but also middle class families throughout rural Georgia[5]. Accordingly – despite opposition from Preservation League members – track construction commenced soon thereafter with much fanfare[6], creating one of history’s most dramatic examples of private enterprise leadingto public success.[7] In 1896 both Stonbridge Baptist Church & Cemetery trustees purchased 5 acres adjacent to Old Depot No 1 on First Street from Jno Gorman “Jockey” Payne[8] resulting in what is now known as Payne Park (named after him). This purchase marked an important milestone as it signaled beginning what has been called “the Town Beautiful Movement” which aimed to preserve downtown aspects of Stockbridge through Parks & Recreation efforts culminating finallyin 1990 with designation of Town Center Plaza area along First Streeet NE [9][10][11][12] Today this beautiful park contains several dozen parkside residences including Stone Chapel Reformed Presbyterian Church whose belltower overlooks old Depot No 1 dating back to 1836….also visible are two large granite tablets commemorating early settlers James Sprague & his wife Elizabeth US Grant Sprague + children George Washington Sprague Jr., Martha Jane Sprague & Edward Everett Hale…..Also visible are several small markers Presidents Andrew Johnson & Ulysses S Grant picnicked here while campaigning prior 2nd term 1860
