The first settlers in what would become Stockbridge were farmers from England who came overland during the 18th century. The first store opened in 1830 and became known as Furman Store before it merged with nearby Duluth into Amory & Johnson Store in 1881. In 1853, a man named Isaac Goodall established a gristmill on Mill Creek which helped start up what would become one of Fulton's largest industries - flour milling. Goodall also donated land for a new courthouse and village hall which was completed in 1865. In 1870, he donated an entire block of land between Main Street and Smith Road which became known as Goodall Square after him. The arrival of railwayroads brought new life to Stockbridge with businesses opening up around railroadside stores such as Amory & Johnson Store (now Macy's) and Furman Store (now JCPenney). A post office wasestablished at Stockbridge in 1915 and remains open today. A large fire destroyed most of downtownSandy Springs on November 17th 1998 but did not touch Stockbridge although many buildings were damaged including: Old Courthouse; Methodist Church; Mrs Beattie's House; Grainsheds Factory; John Sikes' Shop (later renamed JBLT); Post Office building; bank building etc.. After this fire most residents moved away from downtown Sandy Springs towards newer homes near Interstate 85 so stock bridge could continue itsbusiness as usual until 2013 when I-85 got shutdown for construction projects

Stockbridge was founded on October 4, 1811 by men who came from England to begin a new life in this country. The first name given to the town was "Hancock". After some time it was changed to "Stockbridge" because of the bridge that crossed over the creek that later became known as Stockbridge Creek. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Stockbridge on October 4, 1811. They were men who had come from London and were looking for a new home where they could start a new life. They named their town after one of their own families which lived near them in England- the stockbridge family. The town grew rapidly and soon there were many homes and businesses built along Stockbridge Creek. In 1824, an addition to the town was made when Patent No 548,060 was granted to James Whitehead for land between East Stroudsburg Avenue and Shaw Road. This land included present day east side of Lowndes Street and south side of Asbury Drive between Highways 175 & 177 (now I-285). The patent comprised about 203 acres and became known as Whitehead's Addition or Whitehead's Valley(). In 1835, William Hartsfield purchased 160 acres north of present day Lowndes Street between Highways 175 & 177 (now I-285) from James Whitehead for $1,000 cash (). This property became known as Hartsfield's Farmstead (). On March 3rd, 1840 John Gadsden patented two tracts totaling 234 acres comprising most of today's Bradley Park neighborhood (betweenLowndes Street east and west; North Avenue north). These patents relate to acreage that would become known as Gadsden Heights () today
