By 1920, when Stockbridge had annexed Griffin Township to its west side,[2] most of present-day Griffin had also been incorporated into the borough since it was located adjacent to Borough Hall property[3]. Stockbridge was founded in 1821 by Captain James Robertson and his family as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River. In 1824, Robertson erected the first school building in what is now Stockbridge. The town was named for one of its founders, Major General John Richardson Stockbridge (1795–1864). In 1830, Stockbridge became part of Cobb County and lost its charter to become a city; it regained its charter in 1912. The town experienced heavy industrial development during the late 19th century and early 20th century due to its location at an intersection of several railroads and its position as a manufacturing center for cotton textiles, shoes, automobiles and other products from Johnson & Johnson to Sears & Roebuck. The industry declined after World War II but has revived since 2000 with new companies such as Stonington Manufacturing Company and American Weighing Corporation located there. During prohibition period in Georgia, many businesses were run illegally including bootlegging operations that produced alcohol for sale outside of stockbridge limits; some residents did not support prohibition because it led to increased crime rates inside the town limits. In recent years, stockbridge has seen growth in education with several high-profile landmarks being built or renovated within the last decade such as Stonington High School which opened in 2006 and replaced an old high school which had been structurally deficient; also completed within that timeframe was renovations to Chick-fil-A Arena which replaced an ageing arena used by nearby Decatur High School before that campus closed down.; Additionally, two new elementary schools - Union Elementary School (opened 2007) and East Union Elementary School (opened 2009) - have entered into operation within the past five years providing much needed economic stability to the community while also increasing enrollment at both schools through open enrollment programs. He set up shop hereabouts near where present day home stands today c1824.(sic) One important event occured here about 1830 when major general John Richardsonstockbridged Chattahoochee River using barge making this place then called "Johnstown" one stop on road fromAtlanta . Stockbridge was founded in 1787 by Captain James Stockbridge and his wife, Sarah. The town was named after the river that ran through it, the Stockbridge River. The first African American to live in Stockbridge was Ebenezer Robinson. He bought land in the town from General William Pemberton and began to build a home. In 1825, Ebenezer's son, George, built the first white schoolhouse in Stockbridge. The first post office was established in 1827. In 1830, Governor Andrew Jackson made Stockbridge a town. One of the first businesses open in the town was a store owned by John Witherspoon. In 1835, Isaac Baker established an academy in Stockbridge that became one of Georgia's most successful schools. In 1865, Union soldiers burned down the stock bridge over the stock river near present day Bowdoin Street which destroyed much of what had been built within sight of it since its construction less than 10 years earlier as part of their campaign to capture Atlanta from Confederate forces during the Civil War
