Among these pioneers were Julius Ebenezer Barnes (founder/director emeritus of Atlanta's Parkside Hospital), James Fenton (the first black mayor of Atlanta), Booker T Washington Sr., Stalwart Smith (a white lawyer and civic leader who served on both city councils and as acting director general for education in Atlanta), Harry Payne Whitney (founder/CEOs American Express Company)and many more.(2) In 1922-23, during the height of World War II shortages across southeastern United States led to importation quotas for cottonseed oil from Brazil; due to this event Price Waterhouse & Co., acting as agents for importers Tate & Lyle engaged in speculative stock market speculation which resulted in $7 million loss to customers.(3) This experience led Price Waterhouse&Co.'s president John Hutton to develop new ways to do business with clients which would later be called "orporate management." This innovative approach allowed PriceWaterhouse&Co.'s clients - including Coca Cola Bottling Company and PepsiCola -to operate independently without fear that their interests would be subordinated or overruled by higher-ups at their respective companies.(4) A number of people associated with PriceWaterhouse&Co., including Hutton himself, went on to have significant careers in corporate America:(5)(6)(7)(8). One such individual was Clyde Tolson Jr., whom after working briefly at Waco Securities Corporation before being transferred backstabbed at PriceWaterhouse&Co., founded Tolson Brothers Trading Corporation with partners Arthur Ashe(9)(10)and Irving Shapiro(11). In 1785, one of the first white men to settle in Stockbridge was Nicholas Bingham. He acquired land and built a cabin on what is now the corner of Commercial and Newton Streets. In 1823, he married Emma Moulton. They had two children: Edward Bingham and Frances Bingham. In 1848, they erected a Methodist Church on their farm. The family moved to Athens in 1854 and Harry died in 1905. His widow continued to live there until her death in 1942. Mrs. Harry's son, Edwin Hinton, became headmaster of Stockbridge High School from 1944-1950.
