Stockbridge has a long and proud history dating back to 1814 when it was founded as a farming village byFriends of Christ Meeting House founders Isaac Backus and his wife Sarah. The first post office in Stockbridge was established in 1818 and was called "New Market." The name change came about because of competition from other nearby communities that were renamed after American presidents or prime ministers (such as Kingston, South Carolina). In 1837, the village had 2 stores, 3 blacksmiths, 2 farmers, 4 servants, 5 pigs, and 10 acres (4 hectares) of land. In 1853, Daniel Webster purchased some land adjacent to present day Stockbridge for $1 cash. Webster built a house on what is now Main Street which served as his home until his death in 1865. He bequeathed $30 to each voter in Athens County for use towards building public schools. This money helped build three schools – one on Woodward Avenue (now Southwest Broadwalk), one on Center Street near where I-75 crosses over into Athens County (now known as State Road 620), and one on High Street just east of Interstate 85 near today's Walmart parking lot. In 1914 when Georgia became an republic following Reconstruction following the Civil War, Stockbridge voted to become its own city with William Easley as mayor. On November 8th 1914 cityhood was granted to "the little town" by act of the General Assembly under then Governor James Matson Jr.. At that time there were only around 100 residents living within the boundaries outlined by Constitutionally mandated voting districts while another 350 residents lived within unincorporated areas including parts of Clarke County which made up what is now Athens County before that date! The area now known as Stockbridge was originally called the "Town of Waco" by the Creek Indians. The first white person to settle in this area was James Morris, who came overland from Georgia in 1814. He built a cabin on the current site of Stockbridge in 1815. In 1830, John Wesley Powell passed through this region on his way to survey and map the American West. After surveying the area, he named it after himself, Stockbridge Township in honor of his discoveries there. In 1864, when Atlanta became a city, many local residents left for new homes in what is now suburban Atlanta. Some of these original settlers returned to Stockbridge and started a small grocery store there. The store continued operation until 1978. Today, Stockbridge is an agricultural town with a population of about 2,000 people. It has two churches: First Baptist Church and Presbyterian Church both founded in the late 1800s.
