Stockbridge, Georgia is a small town located in the north-central portion of Fulton County, Georgia. It was first settled in 1837 and was named for Nathaniel Stockbridge, an early settler. The current incorporated community was established in 1902. The first firearms were brought to Stockbridge by George Cobb from his home in Marietta, Georgia. He had purchased some rifles and pistols from James Benge of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1839, Cobb built a sawmill and gristmill in what is now the town square. He also developed a small agricultural industry with cornmeal breading, chickens, pork chops and eggs. In 1845, four men--John Aiken (a slave), John Swayne (a white man), James Gierke (an Irishman) and Abraham Lincoln--landed on the same boat at Smyrna Harbor as wagon train led by General Andrew Jackson's forces during the Mexican-American War. They traveled downriver to Athens before journeying back upriver to reach Atlanta on November 17th that year. They brought with them various items they had acquired along their journey including cannons, ammunition and horses. On July 8th of that year, three men on horseback riding into town shot Samuel Webber dead while he walked across the street from his store to get change for his horse at the Merchants' Bank & Trust Building (now part of First Baptist Church). webber had been refused service by one of its employees because he could not afford money for a new suit of clothing; this incident is generally considered to be the start of gun violence in Stockbridge area
