In 1830, it became the county seat of what is now Fulton County. The courthouse in Stockbridge burned down on October 5, 1865 while being used as a jail; it reopened three days later but caught fire again and soon burned to the ground. The present courthouse was completed in 1966 and replaced a structure built in 1870 that had been destroyed by fire. As of 2000, there were 3 churches within the town limits: First Baptist Church (founded 1906), Methodist Episcopal Church (1889), and Presbyterian Church (1881). There are also 2 banks: The First National Bank (founded 1901) and Union Trust Company (1910). Stockbridge is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first inhabitants of what is now Stockbridge were the Creek Indians. The town was platted in 1814 by Major James Gadsden, who named it for his native stockbridge near his home in Scotland. The first store and post office were established here in 1816. A school was built here in 1824 and remained in operation until 1865. In 1846, cottonseed production began to increase on the Chattahoochee River south of Stockbridge and nearby Statesboro; this led to increased development around the town. In 1860, a sawmill was built west of town on Hwy 123 (now Peachtree Road). This mill produced shingles for use on homes and businesses throughout central Georgia until it closed in 1978. The city of Alpharetta annexed parts of Fulton County in 1923; as a result, Stockbridge became part of Alpharetta proper within two years. However, due to its distance from downtown Atlanta and lack of services available thereabouts such as healthcare or shopping malls, voting rights have always been limited to residents within the city limits – although it has occasionally voted out its own mayoralty through straight popular vote since that time (the last being held in 2003). In recent times some investment has been made into developing the community with plans for mixed-use developments including retail/service uses along with apartments or condos for residents which are planned to be completed over time beginning 2020-2025 inclusive. There have also been efforts underway to revitalize both old buildings as well as build new ones around town center which include an arena/parking garage combo located just east of I-285 Exit 122 off New Castle Rd., just north of US 19Aexit 121 off Old Hwy 123 known locally as "The Bridge."
