Stockbridge, Georgia is a small town in the Macon County area of Georgia. The population was 5,811 at the 2000 census. It lies on the east side of Macon County and has a large Ponderosa pine forest as its main economic foundation. Stockbridge is also the home of The Coca-Cola Company and several other major businesses. The first settlers in what would become Stockbridge were George Washington Carver and his family who founded Carver Manufacturing Company in 1894. Other early settlers included Reverend James Sibley and his wife Sarah, who moved from nearby Catoosa to start the Sibley Store in 1899. In 1906, Mayor Willis Hogue donated land to build a public school which opened in 1912 as Stockbridge High School. The town's name comes from two farms that once stood here: "Bridge" farm on the north side of town and "Hill" farm on the south side. The Bridge farm was given to Mr. John Hill by General Nathan Bedford Forrest during World War I for use as a stockade around Fort Pillow soldiers barracks on Confederate soil during the warring period between North and South Carolina (1861- 1865). In 1922, Mrs. Lillie Meeks donated land northwest of downtown for a new shopping center which became known as Meeks Plaza after her husband Lewis Meeks Sr., an early civic leader in Stockbridge who served three terms as mayor from 1951-1957 and also played an important role in developing Cotton Bowl Stadium into one of America's most popular tourist destinations (now Atlanta’s Philips Arena).

Stockbridge is a small town in Georgia, located in the southwestern corner of the state. It is bordered on the east by Roscommon County, on the south by Iredell County, and on the west by Cobb County. The population was 2,859 at the 2010 census. The community was first settled in 1835, when two brothers named John and James Stockbridge purchased a tract of land near what is now Stockbridge from a Cherokee Indian tribe. The town was founded on July 3, 1835, when two men named John and James Stockbridge came to sell property they had acquired in nearby Roscommon County. They were met with hostility from other settlers because they were white men and Native Americans were their enemies then. Despite this opposition, four days after their arrival (July 3-5), the stock bridge that now stands in town was built out of logs donated by local farmers. John Stockbridge served as mayor of Stockbridge for one year before he died in 1850. His brother James took over his role until his death in 1855. In 1865, John's widow married George Washington Hayden who served as governor of Georgia from 1881 to 1886. During her time as governor she appointed Mr. Hayden Mayor of Atlanta which made him one of America's first mayors from outside New York City when it became an open city charter in 1898 (see also timeline: American mayors). In 1903, Mrs. Hayden donated $10 million to buildrazor Hill Country Club which opened its doors to members on December 15th that year (#15 anniversary). At this time there were only 12 homes within 1/2 mile of where it stands today! As more people moved into town over time it grew increasingly difficult to maintain infrastructure such as roads and sewers due to budget constraints; however Mrs. Hayden's gift has helped keep most services running smoothly ever since #15th anniversary!
