Upon their arrival, they named their new community “Stockbridge” after the stock bridge that crossed that river near where it meets the Chattahoochee River (now known as Interstate 285). At first there were only a few settlers living in this early community; most of them came from nearby Duluth, Minnesota via wagon train or boat ride across Lake Pontchartrainometime between 1855-1857.(1) By 1860 there were over 100 residents living in what is now Stockbridge(2). Although farming became the mainstay of life here during those early years, limited resources eventually led to some significant changes within our community over time: In 1865 when local citizens voted to become part of Cobb County – one which would remain an integral part of our community through annexation later that year – they did so using money raised from selling liquor licenses granted by previous county officials.(3) This decision effectively solidified our position as an agricultural center for southeastern Georgia for many years to come! It wasn’t until 1913 when electric lights began being put into circulation throughout Cobb County that we started seeing some major improvements occur within our small town! In 1878, Stockbridge became one of four towns in new Georgia authorized by Congress to be established as cotton plantations with African American labor. On November 1, 1886, Stockbridge's white mayor surrendered power to black trustees and residents when Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest advanced on their town with 800 soldiers to capture or destroy it; Forrest burned down several homes before his withdrawal from the battle three days later. The decline of cotton production during World War II caused many businesses to close their doors throughout much of southern Georgia; however, Stockbridge's downtown business district continued to prosper until around 1990 when it suffered significant damage from arson attacks attributed to local gangs known as "The Hoods".
