Stockbridge is a small town in southern Georgia, located on I-16 northwest of Atlanta. The population was 7,591 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cobb County School District. The first white settlers in Stockbridge were Drury and his family who arrived in 1783 from North Carolina. They built a log cabin on what is now Front Street, near the present day post office. In 1802, they moved to their current location and started a store that served as the nucleus of what would become Stockbridge. The store was destroyed by fire in 1835 but the memory of it still survives in downtown Stockbridge as "Drury's Store". In 1846, two brothers named James and John Cook purchased land at what is now Bridge Road and founded the township of Cooksborough which included parts of today's Stockbridge Township. At that time, there were only three houses in all of Stockbridge with a total population of just over 20 people. In 1850, James and John Cook sold their land to Colonel John Pemberton for $4,500 cash which turned out to be an amazing return on investment for those early days when stock prices were very high! Colonel Pemberton donated many acres (or "farms") around town to make room for new families to settle down and grow crops while also providing education opportunities for local students. Some notable farms that are still in use today include "Pemberton's Farm" where Congressman Jedd Johnson grew up; "Cooksborough Manor" where author Harper Lee lived during her childhood; and finally "Goudy's Farm", which was home to singer Willie Dixon before he moved away from town in 1978. After more than 100 years as a separate municipality within Cobb County - until it merged into Cobb County government effective July 1st 2009 - Stockbridge experienced some significant growth over the past few decades including: addition of several blocks northward along I-16 from Enterprise Rd/SR 527 eastward until reaching Eight Mile Rd; construction of two high schools (International Christian High School & Chattahoochee Valley High School) adjacent to each other on First St NE; development of several businesses such as Super Valu Foods here banking center displaced by Interstate 195 expansion project; major renovations/updates done to Main Street NE Streetscape & sidewalks since 2007 including new streetlights & fountain installed - making this one stop shopping destination not only for residents but visitors too! Additionally much progress has been made towards revitalizing downtown after years being neglected both aesthetically AND functionally; completed installation OF new roofs atop historic buildings dating back to 1800’s complete with original windowsills & hardwood floors inside Complete renovation/UPdates TO Downtown Core Facility facades beginning circa late 2014 – resulting IN A MUCH MORE VISIBLE & PROTECTED DOWNTOWN THAT NOW LOOKS LIKE A REAL OPEN CITY AGAIN! All told it has taken many brave decisions by our City Administrator (& Board Members) OVER THE YEARS + MANY HOURS OF WORK THAT HAVE ALL PAYED OFF AS OUR COMMUNITY GROWS BETTER THEN EVER BEFORE!!!

In 1930, Stockbridge was merged into Atlanta along with other nearby towns such as Decatur and Roswell
