The stock bridge over White River near present day Reseda Boulevard was built around 1850 by David Cobbetts as an engineering experiment to improve navigation on the river but it has been since replaced by a larger concrete span that links both ends of White River Road across White Park Lake (now Watershed Park). In 1865, Jno Pritchard came to live in nearby Lithonia after purchasing land southeast of Stockbridge from Samuel Wortham for $1,000 cash plus 10% interest per year until he sold it for $15,000 more than he had paid just two years earlier; this event marks the beginning of Pritchard's influential ownership stake within Stockbridge Township.. Stockbridge is a town in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,052 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area and is the county seat of DeKalb County. The first white settlers in what is now Stockbridge arrived in 1828. They were led by Major John Robertson and his family. In 1837, James Dorman purchased land in what became Stockbridge from Major Robertson. He built a cabin there and named it "Dorman's Store." The first post office was established in 1838; it was called "Robertson's Ferry." A store and school were built in 1840 by Dr. George Washington Stephenson. The town was chartered on December 17, 1846 by Colonel James Aiken as "Stockbridge Township." It began to grow rapidly, becoming an incorporated village on January 2, 1850 with a population of 1002 people. On February 6, 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered his army to cross the river at Fulton Bridge over the Chattahoochee River into Union territory near Gainesville so that he could escape punishment for desertion from Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest. The bridge failed to close completely because of flooding caused by heavy rains days earlier; this caused many casualties among both armies when troops tried to cross over without proper protection from artillery fire and cavalry charges led by Ewell himself
