The town is named after Stockbridge Manor, a plantation in Cobb County. The first European to visit Stockbridge was Capt. John Smith on his way from Savannah to celebrate the landing of English traders on the continent in 1607. He stopped at what is now Stockbridge about Decatur Creek and built there a shelter for the night on Jan. 15, 1607-1608. From this spot he had a perfect view of what he called "the most beautiful country" in America and wrote home excitedly about it that fall day before setting off again the following spring with his men on what would be their first successful expedition into North America In 1785 General James Oglethorpe founded Oglethorpe University here and named it for him as well as for George Washington who had been President of Virginia when Oglethorpe moved here from Williamsburg in 1784 to become its first professor. In 1892, during Reconstruction days, nearby Marietta became an all-black city because white people abandoned it due to race riots that followed efforts by Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest to cleanse all black people from southern Georgia within three years under provisions of Emancipation Proclamation . Stockbridge's economy has always been agricultural; today's largest employer is Farm Bureau Southeast which operates over 100 local farms including several hundred acres of cotton gin production which employs over 100 workers directly or through subcontractors In recent years increased development around downtown has taken place creating more jobs but also some concerns about traffic congestion caused by modern transportation methods like I-285 and I-75 interchange construction near town center)
