Smith founded what would become Atlanta as a small town on the east side of Decatur Creek in present-day Statesboro. After years of progress by various farmers and entrepreneurs, Atlanta's growth stalled in the late 19th century because of itsdistance from railroad lines and trade centers. In 1906, Atlantans created their own government with a Mayor-Council form of government under which citizens were directly elected to office rather than appointed by county commissioners or other officials. In 1916, when Atlanta's streetcar system went operational and began carrying passengers on main streets rather than through open fields or neighborhoods like it had done before, residents in downtown started to move out into newer development around Third Street and Peachtree Road. This new area became known as "the South Side" and soon after designated statesboro as its location for post office and other important municipal services. When Athens opened its own Post Office in 1924 as part of an effort to consolidate service throughout metroAtlanta (then called Metropolitan Atlanta), it also set off a firestorm among some residents who saw Athens' decision as encroaching upon their turf; eventually only 1/3rd of all mail sent from Athens was delivered through Statesboro. However over time Governors have made visits to GA&A for political events more often then not ensuring that this vibrant community has access to state resources regardless of economic status & ZIP code

Statesboro is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,358 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Statesboro was founded in 1820 by General James Wilkinson as a plantation town in what is now Fulton County. It became an important cotton center during the antebellum period and experienced growth after the Civil War until its decline in the late 19th century. In 1930, Statesboro was renamed to honor Confederate General Robert E. Lee after his death in 1865. Statesboro was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived in 1820 from County Tyrone, Northern Irelandspecifically from Antrim Parish on the north coast of that island. Colonel John Fitzpatrick and Captains Patrick Smyth and Michael Lowry established households there around 1800 CE with land grants from King George III of England; these individuals were among early settlers who built homes along State Street which ran through today's downtown Statesboro before it became a wagon road known as "Old State" Road or "Fitzpatrick's Road." They also developed such plantations as Bald Eagle (now Piedmont Ave.), Fields (now McFarlane Dr.), Chickasaw Trail (now Tomlinson Rd.), Rohrbach Plantation (later known as Snellville), and Randolph Plantation near present day Peachtree Corners Park near University Avenue NW., just east of Interstate 285/I-285 interchange In 1820 when General James Wilkinson took over command of Ulysses S Grant's forces invading Georgia foraging for provisions on his march through that state he came across this group of Scots-Irish farmers living off Fitzpatrick's plantation called "Statesborough" about twelve miles east of present day Athens on Old State Road then called Constitution Street which later became Patton Boulevard outside Athens limits according to one source only making this location within Athens boundaries at least until 1830 when Federal troops burned down Fitzpatrick’s plantation home & all forever changed “Statesborough” into today's Municipalityof Statesboro with land grants extending back to 1795! The following year Captain Smyth followed up Fitzpatrick’s grant with another one plus four acres so named – “Dundalk Place” – adjoining old McIntosh Creek just west of present day Pryor Rd., south side of future I-285 exit 222B looking northeast across McIntosh Creek Valley to Fort Richardson now part of Druid Hills Park bounded by Pryor Rd., FM 3018 & US 1 inside Marietta limits where Ft Richardson once stood prior to establishment by Ulysses S Grant during occupation February 15,1865! In 1815, Statesboro became an incorporated town and within a few years had become a center for cotton production. In 1841, Georgia annexed Alabama, which increased the demand for cotton in Statesboro and other nearby towns. The Panic of 1837 caused a decline in cotton production in Statesboro, but it continued to be a major commercial center until the mid-19th century.
