More than 60 men were killed or wounded before Confederate soldiers fled back into their stronghold). This event is widely considered to be one of the most significant military reverses ever faced by the Confederacy (). During Reconstruction following Reconstruction’s successful conclusion in 1865, states throughout southeastern United States re-established white rule with African Americans serving under Indian officers until 1906 when all African Americans were granted full citizenship rights via statehood ceremonies statewide . One such event occurred on October 16, 1880 when Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest presented certificates of incorporation to twelveblack towns adjacent to Atlanta: Decatur, Grassy Knolls, Hawkinsville/Milton Beattyville/Lonely Valley Plantation; East Stroudsburg/Johnston Station; Kennesaw Mountain; Smyrna; Stone Mountain; Tuskegee Airmen Base Campground (); Whitesburg; Wells Branch).
