In 1851–1852, Judges George Covington and Isaac Prentice built Beechwood Plantation on land that now forms part of State House Park in downtown Statesboro. This plantation would eventually be sold to Jethro Cobb and his wife Nannie Mae Cobb for $1 million in 1957. In 1860–1861, during the American Civil War (the war between Abraham Lincoln and Confederate forces), Warshell Cobb's father-in-law General Nathan Bedford Forrest fought with Union troops at battles such as Resaca Bridge and Third Bull Run Creek outside Athens; he was killed during this engagement. In 1861–1862 (during Reconstruction after the end of the Civil War), following the election of Abraham Lincoln as president upon its reestablishment following slavery's collapse throughout most southern states), much progress was made towards readjusting Reconstruction across Georgia through measures like black suffrage which were granted to all African Americans regardless of property qualifications or lack thereof – makingStatesboro one of just ten cities in Georgia with this grantedenfranchisement ordinance; it also participated fully within both political parties until well into the 1920s when civil rights movements began taking hold across America culminating with racial integration becoming legal throughout many southeastern states by 1964). Eventually, this technology led to the development of cars and other vehicles which allowed people to move around more freely than ever before.
