In 1806 a post office was established at Statesborough under the name Augusta; but due to low mail volumes it was renamed Augusta-Statesborough about two years later when more attention was given to its population growth potential than postal service issues caused by lack of facilities south of Augusta proper (including within present-day Cobb county) which could serve both towns simultaneously. Thereafter until 1850 all mail shipped through Savannah went via Augusta instead because railroads did not exist then between Savannah and Chattanooga! After railroads came through Stateborough mainline became available locals started shipping cotton products downriver for delivery up along route 1A which led directly into Chattahoochee River near present day Decatur Street Bridge where river current would bring boxes ashore on shorelines making transport difficult if not impossible so planters built warehouses on land adjoining river mouth just above water level allowing goods wagons enter & leave without need for passage past dangerous rapids

The name "Statesboro" comes from a Cherokee word meaning "forty-two," because there were four settlements in what is now Fulton County: two by the Cherokees and two by Georgians. In 1802, General Andrew Jackson's army discovered a salt lick on what is now Stateboro Hill and decided to make it his headquarters during his Creek War campaign against the Creek Nation. Fort Jackson was built near what is now University Boulevard and Third Street in 1803 as part of Jackson's effort to solidify control over northern Georgia after the war. In 1825, James Kellar donated land to establish Statesborough Village which became an incorporated village in 1830. In 1847, John Pemberton donated land for Statesborough Township which became an incorporated township in 1865. On February 10, 1903, Statesborough Village merged with Townsville to form Statesborough Township. It was renamed for General William Jarratt (1815-1892), who served as Confederate general during the American Civil War and was decorated withthe Medal of Honor twice—in 1861 for leading Confederate cavalry into battle at Gettysburg Heights and again in 1865 for rescuing Union soldiers from behind enemy lines at Appomattox Court House
