Statesboro is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The settlement that would become Statesboro was founded by white settlers in 1799 as a small community on the East Cobb River. By 1825, it had grown to include about 100 homes and had moved to its present location on what is now Old Road between Peach Creek and Chattahoochee River. In 1829, when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House, his army camped near Statesboro for several days before moving back across the river to Dalton Station where they were met by Union forces under General Nathan Bedford Forrest. In 1871, when Georgia became a U.S. state, Statesboro became its capital; it retained this title until 1903 when it was renamed Atlanta. The city's first mayor was John Sitton (1863-1867). during Reconstruction years many African Americans worked in local businesses and churches or took jobs with white companies such as Joplin Rubber Works (now Dow Chemical) and Waffle House restaurants beginning around 1865 while white citizens continued to own land and manage businesses through family ownership patterns which persist today
