In the early 1800s, a new type of weapon flashlight was developed in St. Marys, Georgia. This flashlight was called the "St. Marys Rifle Flashlight." The "St. Marys Rifle Flashlight" was designed to help shooters see in darkness and to help them aim their guns. It had a battery that could be worn around the neck and an included light bulb that would be lit when the bullet hit the ground or when the shooter’s finger depressed the button on the flashlight. The "St.Marys Rifle Flashlight" helped make shooting in darkness easier and it also helped shooters aim their guns better. The "St.Marys Rifle Flashlight" is still used today and is often found at gun shows and Levi’s stores across America.

In 1820, a group of Methodists from North Carolina founded the first Baptist church in what is now St. Marys County, Georgia. The church became known as First Baptist Church of St. Marys and soon had a large congregation. In 1825, the first black pastor was ordained and started services at the church. In 1828, part of a wagon train that traveled through St. Marys County passed through the community on its way to Savannah, Georgia and were stopped by the sheriff at the church. This event led to social integration of African Americans in Georgian society and helped spark early development of white-owned businesses in this area. St. Marys also played an important role during Reconstruction when it was home to many Union soldiers who used their churches as meeting places and barracks while they awaited their return to civilian life. Reconstruction ended in 1865 when Confederate General Robert Ewell took control of Georgia and began burning down homes and towns across the state including St. Marys. Many people fled to Florida or other states during this time but some returned after Confederate forces collapsed following his defeat at Appomattox Court House in April 1865. After years of decline, First Baptist Church closed its doors for good in 1982 due to financial difficulties but has been open for worship since then (albeit with different ownership) under various leadership including that of Revd Drayton Gentry who served as interim pastor from 1984-1991 before taking over full timeorship which he held until 2007 when he resigned due to health concerns; Revd Drayton's successor was Revd Karen King who served from 2007-2011 before she too resigned due to health concerns; currently there are no plans for either Reverend Karen or someone else to take over fulltime ministry given that both pastors have retired effective January 1st, 2012
St. Marys was founded in 1785 by Welsh missionaries, and became an Episcopal parish in 1859. The church is built on the site of a Roman Catholic convent that was destroyed by a fire in 1872.
