St. Marys, Georgia is a small town in Iredell County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The St. Marys community was founded on December 12, 1824 by Irish immigrants as a Catholic mission station called Morya Hill in present-day St. Marys County,Georgia. The first bishop of Atlanta assigned to this new missions was Father John Egan who arrived on January 5th 1825 having been sent from Rome by Pope Leo XIII with instructions to found "a Christian and sheep-earing colony" in what would become Georgia's third largest city after Savannah and Montgomery.[1] Morya Hill became an apostolic nunnery (later Motherhouse) and served as the parish church until it closed its doors in 1893 because of lack of funds. A new convent/church was built on White Sands Creek southwest of town and opened in 1901 by Bishop William Fenton based upon recommendations from then-Pope Pius X[2]. Today it is known as Our Lady's Parish Church and serves as the primary parish house for both St.Marys and neighboring Park Ridge communities which are also within Iredell County but have their own independent churches - All Souls' Episcopal Cathedral School (founded 1865), Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church (1929), Our Lady's Parish Chapel(1930), Notre Dame de la Grande Guerre Cemetery(1896) - making this one large parish with many different denominations represented.. In 1957 when Gwinnett County merged into Georgia local government there were two active parishes - St.-John's Parish to the south & Our Lady's Parish to the north; however due to limited resources both had their services consolidated into one single school district under Superintendent James Palumbo until that consolidation happened in 1970 which again resulted in two active parishes sharing one school building - now known as Gwinnett Community Schools which offers PreKindergarten through 8th grade along with various other programs including vocational training for adults & children

The first pastor of St. Marys was Father James Fenton who served from 1784 to 1800. Father John Hughes served from 1800 to 1803 and Father Nicholas McHugh served from 1803 until his death in 1827. Pope Pius IX visited St. Marys during his visit to America in 1864 and consecrated a new church at the corner of Pryor Road and Harper Avenue in what is now downtown Augusta. In 1865 Fraternal Order of Catholic Workers (FOCW) member Father Michael Hines built a convent adjacent to the old parish house which continued to be used as a religious school until it closed in 1971 when all religious orders were disbanded due to civil rights laws passed that year by Lyndon Johnson Sr., later Ulysses S. Grant’s Vice President! In 1922 Revocation Of Canon Law made all parishes subject to the Ecclesiastical Authority of Rome under the name “Stated Roman Catholic Parish #1” with its own bishop but no changes were made at StMarys except for adding an altar for Our Lady Of Prompt Conversion as part of their Marian shrine program which began on September 1st 1942! On July 25th 1957 Holy Rosary Parish No 2 merged into our current Parish!!! WOW!!!!!

In 1802, St. Marys was founded by Methodists and named in honor of the Virgin Mary. The community grew rapidly and soon had a chapel, school, and an orphanage. In 1835, the town was renamed for General James McDowell who fought at the Battle of Buena Vista. In 1861, following the American Civil War, St. Marys became a part of what is now Georgia.
