History of St. Marys,GA The first settlement in what is now St. Marys County was made by the Georgia Indians in 1733. The town was named after Our Lady of the Rocks, a mountain peak in central Georgia. The first white settler in what is now St. Marys County was James Hogg, who settled on a farm near present-day Mount Pleasant about 1800. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson built his home at Holly Springs on Hogg's land and became the first U.S. president from Tennessee. In 1821, Indian traders arrived in what is now St. Marys County and began trading with the Cherokee nation for goods such as corn and tobacco. By 1830, some 300 whites had moved to the area and founded a village known as Hugh’s Landing on the Muscogee River about six miles southwest of present-day Mount Pleasant. By 1840, however, only 25 people lived there; most of the original settlers were farmers or slaves who worked plantations in nearby Savannah or Montgomery counties. A Methodist Episcopal mission was established at Hugh’s Landing in 1843 and soon after many Methodists migrated to this new community from surrounding areas including Macon and Jonesborough Counties east of Atlanta where they had been given religious instruction by Revestoiturians led by Reverend Samuel Morse (1795-1872). After two years of operation, the Mission Board decided that it could not maintain enough churches to support all its believers so it relocated its operations to Atlanta in 1845 under the leadership of Bishop John Dickey (1807-1892). In 1865, following Confederate surrender at Appomattox Court House surrounded by Union troops at Fort Sumter Laboratory Barracks on April 12th outside Saint Petersburg, Alabama all Methodists located within nine miles radius were ordered to leave their homes within twentyfour hours regardless of their religious affiliation or lack thereof! Many did not have time to flee before they were burned out or driven off their property into rebel lines! A total of 106 buildings including 50 churches were destroyed during these raids which are still considered one of Georgia's largest church burnings!!

In 1815, he founded Kennon on the Chattahoochee River after purchasing land from an Indian tribe. The town grew quickly due to its location beside the river and easy access to transportation. By 1830, the town had a population of 300 people and it became an important trading center for the region. In 1840, Kennon built a schoolhouse which remain as one of the city's landmarks today. In 1861, he donated $5,000 for development of downtown Kennon which included a courthouse, jail, library and new public square. He also provided funds for construction of Methodist church in downtown Kennon which opened in 1865). AfterKennon's death in 1892, his wife Margaret continued to operate the business until her death in 1916; she was then succeeded by her son-in-law Wernher von Braun who operated it until his death in 1958; von Braun's widow developed it into one of Atlanta's most significant commercial districts during post-war Reconstruction period (1948–1965).
