Fenton became the first bishop of Augusta and St. Marys Parish was created under his jurisdiction. A new church building was built in 1830 which served as the parish church until it burned down in 1886. The second Baptist church in town was built in 1845 by John Brown and serving as the community's primary place of worship until it also caught on fire in 1886. After that, services were handled at various other local churches until a new Baptist church was built on Third Street in 1915 which still serves as its primary home today! After World War II, many families left St. Marys County for better opportunities elsewhere but some remain here to this day including the Swartz family who have owned and operated Swartz Chevrolet since 1907!
The first white person to set foot on what is now St. Marys, Georgia was Capt. John Ross in 1795. He erected the first house on the site in 1817. The town began as a small settlement of four homes, but grew rapidly due to the resourcefulness and entrepreneurialism of its founders. By 1835, St. Marys had become a bustling commercial center with a population of around 100 people. It remained an agricultural community until after World War II when progress toward manufacturing and other economic endeavors caused the decline of agriculture in what is now St.Marys County.
