St. Marys, Georgia is a small town in Troup County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,094 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by Methodists in 1837 as a mission station called Friendship Springs. It became an independent municipality in 1907 and changed its name to St. Marys after the patron saint of childbirth and motherhood. In 1955, it merged with nearby Athens to form the Athens-Clarke Combined Statistical Area (CSA). According to the 2000 census, St. Marys has a total area of , of which (or 98%) is land and (or 2%) is water. A main street runs through the center of town hall, while other streets lead out to individual homes or businesses on adjacent lots or lakeshores. The town's only shopping mall—the Friendship Springs Shopping Center—lies about east of downtown on FM 922 near US Highway 171/SR 740 exit 5A (Old Route 153). There are also several smaller shops scattered throughout central and eastern portions of town; most notably a hardware store, grocery store, pizzeria, and two gas stations within walking distance of each other on Main Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue south of Town Hall Square. In 1840, a millrace (a watercourse) connecting Savannah with Tybee Island became operational and greatly helped increase grain production within the town limits; this resulted in increased business opportunities for businesses within the town walls as well as new investment outside of them which ultimately led to its growth during this time period In 1865, part of what is now Grady College Road was dedicated as part of a larger project called "Avenue road". This project improved transportation options within and outside ofStamfordville by creating graded streets which facilitated easier access by residents and businesses alike In 1870-71, term began at Grady college preparatory school which would continue until 1954 when it merged into Williamsburg Community School District . During this time period there were other changes withinStamfordville including annexation by Douglas County in 1886 followed by incorporation into Grady College Preparatory School District 2 through 1969 before finally becoming part of Douglas County School System . On February 15th 1907 vote took place at courthouse to change name from marketplace to townsite due to concerns about negative associations with "the old marketplace." This move coincided with new street paving completed throughouttownscape making shopping/crowding difficult or impossible without prior arrangement Since its establishment as a village in 1811,Stamfordville has undergone many transformations including becoming an incorporated municipality in 1865; being annexed into Douglas County Counties School System; becoming part of Grady College Preparatory School District 2;and finally finding its way intoDouglas County Schools System where it currently resides
On July 3, 1814, three days after the Battle of Chickamauga, General Ulysses S. Grant led an army of Union forces against a Confederate force at St. Marys Creek.
