St. Marys, Georgia is a small town in northwest Georgia on the Tennessee River. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1822 by Methodists from Scotland as a mission station for Scots-Irish immigrants who had fled to the area during the American Revolution. The name of the town comes from the Latin word "mary," meaning "peaceful." The first St. Marys church was built in 1824 and dedicated to Our Lady of Peace. In 1828, Rev. John Rankin organized a group of ministers to help pioneer Methodism in this new area and purchased 640 acres (248 ha) of land along the Tennessee River north of present-day St. Marys. The first sermon preached at this new church was preached by Rev. Rankin himself on November 25, 1830. In 1836, Revd James Hogg became pastor of St. Mary's after being appointed by Bishop Edward McCoy of Nashville to preach here following his ordination as an Episcopal priest in Manchester, England on October 29, 1835. This congregation grew rapidly and soon outgrew their original building which burned down in 1840). In 1843 they built a new brick church near what is now downtown St. Marys on land donated by Mr.-Jesse Whitehead (from nearby Reseda). In 1863 General Ulysses S Grant visited this community while he was campaigning against Confederate General Robert Ewell and reported favorably about it to President Abraham Lincoln who ordered him to stop his campaign there because he did not want any more people stirred up against slavery or Unionism than necessary! In 1922 when Stated Consecrated Ground reverted back to Parish possession due to lack of interest within its boundaries among private individuals/groups interested therein*, Mrs.-Lillie King assumed responsibility for Saints' Missions * See attached file entitled "History Of SaintMaryS Church At SaintMaryS" for additional information about her role within that period
In 1821, the town of St. Marys was founded by Georgia Baptists and named for the Virgin Mary. The first pastor was Rev. James Waterer, who served from 1821 to 1830. The first store in St. Marys was built in 1825 by John Mclntyre and operated as a grocery store until 1840 when it became a dry goods store. In 1851, the town began to receive mail service from Atlanta and in 1865 it had its own railroad station. In 1870, the town was renamed Eufaula after General Ulysses S. Grant who donated land for the creation of this community. On November 30th, 1880, the first school opened in St.Marys with Mr.(J) Noe as teacher and 11 students including 3 girls 130 years later! Mrs.(M) McClure taught from 1886-1896 followed by Dr.(F) Findlay from 1896-1901 before moving to Valdosta where she continued her teaching career until her death on October 6th, 1916 at 93 years old!
