St. Marys is a town in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The history of St. Marys goes back to 1814 when it was founded by Methodists as a small hamlet called "Smyrna." Smyrna grew into a prosperous cotton and rice village that boasted many residences and churches including the first one in what is now St. Marys. In 1835, Smyrna became the county seat of DeKalb County and the name "St. Marys" was given to the settlement which quickly prospered as an agricultural center with plantations devoted to cotton culture, supplying world markets with this valuable commodity. Many residents of Smyrna came to live in what would become St. Marys after its incorporation as a town in 1845 under then-County Mayor James Auld's leadership – including future Governors (John Dahlquist and Zebulon Pike). One reason for this growth might have been its location on two main trade routes connecting Atlanta with Charleston and Wilmington, North Carolina - one through Rome or Mabletown (now Fairburn) on the Alabama border and another through Decatur on Interstate 85 west of Chattanooga before terminating at Marietta near Athens/Miltonville about 20 miles east of downtown Atlanta; both highways facilitated easy access for goods transported by wagons over long distances from surrounding counties during those early days of railroad development in Georgia &Alabama In 1860, St.Marys had 496 residents; it had grown rapidly since its incorporation but still lacked schools and other essential infrastructure such as water supply or sewage disposal systems – problems that would soon become common among newly incorporated towns throughout Georgia following Reconstruction followed by World War II efforts to rebuild post-war America using federal dollars One result of these limitations was that much economic growth occurred within the single community rather than outside it: jobs were created in various trades related to agriculture while businesses located elsewhere benefited from increased freight traffic due largely to easier access to railroads linking regional cities with global markets . St. Marys was founded in 1794 by the Rev. John Carroll as a small mission station on the Chattahoochee River near present-day Montgomery, Alabama. The Reverend Carroll and his wife, Catherine Minor, were also the first white missionaries to arrive in Georgia. In 1801, St. Marys became an Episcopal parish with jurisdiction over all of what is now Georgia. The Reverend John Broughton served as pastor of St. Marys from 1809 until his death in 1821. Two years later, Rev. Thomas Gardner succeeded Broughton and served until his death in 1828; he was the first African American to serve as pastor of any Georgian church outside of Savannah. During Rev. Gardner's tenure, construction began on what is now the main church building which opened its doors in 1830.—Today, St.Marys remains one of the most popular Episcopal parishes in Georgia.— On November 16th, 1794, Reverend John Carroll founded what would become known as St. Mary's Parish Church located on the Chattahoochee River near present-day Montgomery Alabama after traveling down that river for several weeks preaching Christianity to Native Americans and others who were then living among them.–In 1830 construction began on what is today the main church building which opened its doors to worshipers on November 16th Celebrating 350 years since this groundbreaking event!
In 1793, St. Marys was founded by the Fathers of the Church as a convent for girls. In 1802, it became an official religious institute and was known as the "Hospital of the Blessed Virgin Mary." The Sisters served in this institution until 1954 when it merged with another religious institute to form the Presentation Sisters.
