In 1821, Georgia became the 25th U.S. state when it was split from Florida. The eastern part of Florida was annexed by Georgia and in 1827, the western part of Florida was annexed by Alabama. In 1831, after a referendum, Georgia became the 29th U.S. state and St. Marys was created as its seat of government. The town had a population of only 100 people in 1830 but by 1850 it had grown to 2,500 people and its economy depended on cotton plantations and shipping opportunities for goods coming out of the Confederacy. The town’s primary industry until the late 19th century was agriculture but over time some other businesses started up such as a bank and a grocery store which helped support the community during this time period. By 1910, St. Marys had become an important center for education with 6 schools (3 public and 3 private) that supplied students with everything from common core math classes to high school level science classes. In addition to its educational institutions, St. Marys also boasted one of the first churches in this area – Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel – which opened in 1853 and quickly became one of the most popular tourist destinations in central Georgia due to its colonial-era architecture and interesting history!
In 1802, the first Baptist church in St. Marys was built on a small parcel of land that had been donated by Captain James Cook. Reverend Dr. John Witherspoon officiated at the first service. The congregation moved to its present location in 1816 and soon began to build larger buildings, including ahall and a chapel. Rev. Dr. Witherspoon also started an academy for girls in the town in 1854 and served as its first headmistress. In 1870, St. Marys became an independent parish with its own bishoprics and clergymen under one roof - making it one of the most developed parishes in Georgia at that time.
