Pope Leo XIII named St. Marys, Georgia the first U.S.A. Mission in 1917 and it was missionary work that led to the growth of this town on the Chattahoochee River. The Catholic Church had a presence in what is now Georgia since the 16th century and by 1775, there were over 1,000 Catholics living in Georgia. In 1802, when Spain ceded Florida to America, they also added St. Marys as part of Florida’s territory; however, no priest ever arrived here to preach or administer sacraments until 1807 when Father James McDonnell from Dublin sent a team of missionaries with instructions to establish a parish here at least 50 miles south of Atlanta (then known as New Orleans). The first church was built on land donated by Captain John Smythe and completed in 1809-10; construction continued until 1840 due to financial difficulties caused by Seminole Wars and American Civil War efforts for independence from Spain. Georgia’s population more than tripled during the 19th century due to waves of Irish Catholics coming westward looking for new opportunities after fleeing poverty back home; many others followed suit during Reconstruction which ended in 1865 because of president Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. By 1870 there were over 200 churches and religious organizations operating in Georgia with some 2 million baptized Catholics who lived hereabouts; however, only about 50% attended services regularly while most did not even bother traveling outside their own neighborhoods for religious services or contributed financially to the upkeep of their churches/orphansage homes/colonies (which often housed scores or hundreds of slaves). Father McDonnell returned permanently to St. Marys in 1892 following his experience journey around North America preaching evangelism among native peoples as well as becoming involved with helping found parishes all along the East Coast including one near Jacksonville Beach FL where he met Saint Fidelis who would later become bishopric leader for All Souls Cathedral Parish (based out of Savannah) – soon thereafter becoming an Apostolic Vicar Apostolic charge( attached) within each diocese across America responsible for spiritual development within its constituent parishes throughout those areas covered thereby coordinating apostolic activity across all levels including bishops’ conferences wherever necessary while also presiding over special sessions called “parish councils” where ecclesiastical Forwardness Committees composed mostly laymen rubberstamped whatever theological decrees were proposed by bishops attending these meetings brought about changes within individual parishes without necessarily involving any clergy personally other than approvingly noting these changes once finalized against objections invariably raised by laity who alleged excessive centralization within apostolate leading ultimately to increased congregation size rather then effective pastoral ministry despite claims otherwise by senior clerics! The growth associated with industrialization starting around 1880 saw an increase not just among Catholics but also Protestants whose numbers soared from 3,000 nationwide at peak in 1890to 14,500in 1920 after being largely confined mainly to rural areas north and eastof Philadelphia preceding that city’s incorporation into Pennsylvania resulting then massive migration inwardby both groups minorities increasingly experiencing segregated housing developments zoning laws discriminating against them regardless ethnicity color religion sexual orientation etc., characteristic today although various religious organizations have persisted such as Uniting The Christian Families which plans annual events celebrating traditional Catholic values & Religious Freedom Day annually attracting thousands+ participants thereto but meets rarely anymoreoutside urban areas& much smaller crowds visit historic sites featuring exhibits related thereto Nevertheless Christianity remains dominant economy dominates culture largest employer still local government
